hi folks after a long time looking for a job ive managed to get a relief driver job not the best i know but its a start with a well known builders merchants.Basically i drive the van making local deliverys but have also been driving the wagon which is a daf fl crane wagon which i enjoyed a lot i have a hiab licence but with these its the remote control version and they are putting me through the day course next week which is a bonus as well.the current driver comes with me and whilst im driving wagon so he can control the hiab when making deliveries the best thing is hes goin on holiday for 2 weeks soon and ive been told its all mine then till he gets back
it will be good to get the experience and im well pleased.
the tacho is a lot easier than i thought as well which im glad about because i thought that would be confusing so anyone worrying about that its easier than using the radio lol i would prefer driving it full time but youve got to take what u can when u can i suppose the money is s***e but there you go my point is any newbies like me might want to try builders merchants because most of them are willing to train you up especially the main ones i think i might be doin folk lift as well which is another job in its self i just thought id post this in this forum as maybe it may be usefull good luck
Getting the forklift ticket is easy. Just remember the overhang is at the front, and its rear steer, so kind of acts similar to reversing your truck. Tip is to keep a pallet length away from where you want the pallet to end up, then when you steer to get lined up you wont knock everything over.

Thats basically what my instructor said. It works for me, went from never having driven a forklift to getting the ticket in a day, though some courses are 2 days. The test is basically reverse, steer round to pick a pallet (normally a big wooden box) up off some racking, then go round a tight slalom style course, then reverse round the course, put the pallet down, drive somewhere else, pick it up and do the same course in the opposite direction and end up putting the pallet back on the racking.
Not had to use a forklift since, but its helped with the plant hire jobs ive been doing, especially loading telehandlers etc.
