Final shift done

A bit of a sad day and at the same time a bit of excitement going to pastures new. Leaving one colour for another, anyway got the truck back to them pretty much unscratched to how it could have been.

Had one of your fans off here fired an RPG off a m.way bridge at you or what?

Btw…You said you were fixing your firm’s reefer trailers, didn’t know RTK had fridges.

Different firm altogether, was only with these last 3 weeks.

Was Heisenbergg he found where I was. He is sore because I told him I couldn’t name my new Stobart truck after him.

Most impressive, I wonder how they stuck it on that earth coloured wall a couple of foot above a container, it’s almost like it’s levitating, probably ‘No More Nails’ that stuff sticks like [zb] to a blanket.

Thats been parked too close to a certain type of caravan park…

I took advice from Bking and decided to go on a trip down memory lane to Istanbul as he said everyone was very friendly. Well I was just traveling through Iraq and boom, turns out they are not as friendly as he said.

If you were going to Istanbul and you ended up going through Iraq you should ditch that sat nav you keep going on about.

At least you walked away earning a full weeks wage then…

We used Keedwells yard at Henswell last year for overflow at Howdens. Talking to their drivers I couldn’t believe the wage they were on. Even more unbelievable is they actually had drivers they employed for that money given that Normanton and Doncaster were both within reasonable travel to work and paying over £2/hr more.

It is 10.75p per hour plus £22 per night out, why I left them after a very short period. Work you to death max hrs to try to earn a decent wage. Trucks rarely run dry miles, always a return load and lots of waiting time, then max hrs to try to recover the lost time. Wasn’t my cup of tea. Planners are useless and on the phone every 5 mins, encouraging you to unload and put on break. I did my last shift and simply walked away. Some good lads working there but they won’t stay either.

Highbridge

Highbridge

Different ball game, Hensall and Hull are run badly, even the manager of Hull walked out, drivers do on a daily basis. The shunter went on holiday and never returned, all this was when I had only just started. I saw 6 new drivers start and saw the same leave.

How long where you with them?

This is what I never ever get - companies willing to let drivers walk because they have an attitude of just replacing them with another backside in a seat. Its a completely false economy.

Back in my days as an Ops Manager I looked into this because the estate where I worked was competitive and drivers moved about. A company would come along and pay 20p an hour more then all of a sudden a proportion of drivers would be away. So I worked out how much it costs to hire a driver, induct them, train them to a point where they can work alone (like the person they’re replacing) and very quickly worked out that it was cheaper to add in an extra run, reduce the rest of the runs accordingly so the lads (and one lady) were doing slightly less hours each week for the same pay - not a pay rise in real terms (I didn’t have that authority) but in terms of them doing less for the same.

I also used to talk to drivers when I got wind they wanted to leave because most of the time issues can be resolved if they’re raised.

Straight up treating people fairly saves companies money in the long run.

100% agree with that, when I took the job I was told that your not pushed to the max, a 15 hr day was your choice. The very first week I had knocked up 65 hrs, Each time a driver walked out, his loads were put n the rest of us until they replaced him. This happened around 6 times in my 3 weeks. I was talking to the lads who had been there for years and they said this is now becoming the norm. When the manager just walked out the alarm bells started ringing to me. I quickly followed as I don’t work this way or for this type of company. I do not mind working but if I do a 15 hr shift, I expect it to be my choice not to be told I have to do it. I do my job well and am a decent driver who will muck in with anyone, but I am not a doormat.
