thought that might be the prob so have tried both those with and without the read only bit activated but it does not seem to matter - will try again though
properties then attributes - taken out read only tick - tried to add password - no joy

It’s a while since I’ve used MS Word, but THIS should help
No help as that is what I have been doing but it does not work
A bit of a long shot, but you could try opening the file and use “Save As” to save it with a different name and see if you can password protect it then.
Rog, are you getting an error message? If so what is it.
Is this trying to protect a file that you ‘crashed’ out of. If so then the temp file that Word uses will you work on it is still there. That may be causing the problem.

None of the above

I’ll give that a try…
Both winzip & winrar will password protect files. Not ideal but it’s a workaround if you’re still struggling & really need the security.
My brain hurts… still having probs… any more ideas
Check out some of these to protect a folder
