And truck drivers cry their eyes out because they only get a tenner per hour…
I cringe when people ask me what I do for a living.
I can understand that. I felt exactly the same in some of my latter years. Unfortunately we are usually all tarred with the same brush.
Quite sad because I remember being so proud of what I did in the early years when we were “knights of the road”
OK maybe that’s a bit OTT but it seemes we had a lot more respect then.
I’ve never been embarrassed to admit what I do, it’s a worthy occupation imo, the fact that the d/heads among us cause embarrassment is just something you have to endure.
I remember meeting and getting on with another couple on holiday once, when we got talking and I told them what I did, the guy said ’ Really?, you seem too intelligent to be a trucker’’ or words to that effect
…I could not make my mind up if I was being complimented or insulted, I went right off him after that comment.
As for the past ‘Knights of the road’ thing,…that lies somewhere between pure myth and pure ■■■■■■■■ I reckon.
I once was met with hugely surprised expressions when I said what I did. They then said but you don’t look like a truck driver. I said what’s one supposed to look like? They said well you know, fat scruffy and generally out of shape
[emoji23] I have had that scenario a few times over the years.

Maybe you were punching above your weight with the couple just saying like
There is nothing better than 2 tucker’s kicking the ■■■■ out of each other back in the day then shaking hands
What you have now is Nancy boys who would have a fit if a bit of oil got on there hand

I normally have a great deal of respect for your postings Rob, because you usually talk a great deal of common sense (no, I’m NOT taking the p**s!), but you’re way, way out of line with that one pal!.

Steve
Ok, but I just think it’s some kind of ‘Romantic’ type notion that people like to think happened, but it never existed, where things get exaggerated until people believe it, a bit like ‘You could leave yer front door open all night in our street in the old days’ etc etc.

About year ago was driving through some part of central London. Next thing 3 cop cars come from.noware along with undercover bmw. Who been following me for ages. Then the Fella in car in front of me.jumps out and police taser him have him on the floor.
Next thing you know there must of been about 50 +people there with phones out.
Police trying tell them to go away but they didn’t take any notice
Years ago a sunday newspaper,I think it was News of the World, ran a weekly column asking drivers who got into trouble on the road to write in about drivers who helped them out. It was nearly always a (proper) lorry driver and the paper gave the (proper) driver an award of some sort and it was called the knight of the road award.
We convince our selves that we NEED more junk so have to work for longer hours too enable us to buy what we WANT but don’t NEED. My interpretation anyway.

Nail on head. People are obsessed with social media and bullshining each other to death
Very angry people venting on each other because they don’t have the intelligence to realise that the politicians have us exactly where they want us. Trapped in mortgages and needing to out do one another. Pathetic really…keep the cheap labour and long hours capitalism thundering along folks

In my youth, many many years ago. I was in a car with a mate ( he was driving) someone cut him up at a junction. A lot of fist shaking and swearing and then a chase ensued ( by my mate) It started in Farnborough went to Aldershot, down into Guildford and then back to Camberley. At this point the car being chased stopped and my mate got out and they came to blows. Except it was more a dance with handbags at dawn. I don’t think one decent blow landed and it was hysterical. I nearly wet myself laughing. It eventually fizzled out with both drives calling the other the W word. My mate got back in the car then had a go at me for not piling in and helping. To which I burst out laughing again. You couldn’t make it up
