Fifo mines in Australia

I keep seeing adverts for fifo mines with salaries of 100k+ looks kinda fun driving those big diggers no good for me as i would get sun burnt in winter time if i didnt have to wear clothing to keep warm. Just seems a little odd that they are plugging this. Is 100k a good wage there?

100k is decent. Fuel costs $1. a litre. Loaf of bread $4.00, milk under $2.00 a litre. Important items on the shopping list are dearer, 750ml rum $50.00, beer $38~40 for 30x330 ml.
Quoting numbers is of little help until it can be related to costs. Housing is very expensive here.

i did google the average salary in australia and 1 hit said it was 101k another said 65-70k.

what is a weeks or months rent in a reasonable area with reasonable amenities?

You’re not there for “kinda fun”, your expected to work 12hrs a day for 2 weeks, then have a week off. You’ll also have to meet quotas. It’s not all beer and skittles, it’s hard yakka.

dont mean to be disrespectful but as a lorry driver how long is your average day

Nothing disrespectful abot asking questions. In Western Australia I was doing 168 hours a fortnight.

im not sure how your regs work but doesnt that work out more than 12 hours a day? Or were you doing mine work then?

I’d alternate between 12 and 17 hour shifts, i.e. M 17, T 12, W 17, T 12, F 17, S 12, S off.
In any 72 hour period (three days) there must be a total of at least 27 hours of non-work time including three breaks of at least seven continuous hours. The remaining non-work time can be made up of other continuous breaks of 30 minutes or more. This non-work time cannot include breaks from driving of less than 30 minutes as they are counted in work time.

That’s a bit of a “how long is a piece of string?” question: it varies. In Sydney (and I’m not talking beachside or harbourside or even “water glimpses”) the average is ~$750+ pw - Melbourne and Brisvegas similar, Perth probably isn’t much cheaper. If you move inland to a regional centre that’s big enough for constnt work and has decent shops, medical care &c rent is say $500-600pw but there is sfa availability.

There’s a bit of carryfastitis, but not as bad as the genuine article. Only the big companies have all the wizz bang cameras.

Wowzers! That is steep!

That’s what I was doing offshore on the platforms, but I reckon digger work is a bit more drawn-out and long, compared to regulated breaks and in-betweeny pauses we always seemed to get.

The regulations only state minimum breaks, if you need more you can take it.
Much of the north of WA has no facilities. Everything you need, you have to carry with you.
Who wants to take a twelve, or longer, hour break alone, in the middle of nowhere?
