How many would chuck their job in if they hated their vehicle?

I’m quite happy with mine, but currently the firm is losing a few drivers and it wouldn’t surprise me if the decision of one that’s just left is the piece of crap he’s been driving.

For whatever reason when replacing a couple of ageing (06) Volvos, the powers that be decided on 67 plate DAF CFs of a lower spec to a number of 17 plate DAFs. After a few months the one driver has quit and the other has just switched to a 63 plate Axor.

I had the misfortune of half a day with one of the 67 plates and in all honesty I would be looking to find a way to avoid driving the piece of [zb] every day, whether it be moving on or accidentally on purpose writing it off, they really are not fit for purpose.

Genuinely curious , whats wrong with the 67 plates dafs?

Fleet was mainly Actros, several Axors and a couple of Volvos (no idea what engine/ gearbox/ other specs, never really been that interested in these details, just give me the keys and I’ll work out how to get from A to B) all the Actros have now gone, first batch were replaced by Arocs, the rest by DAF 460 CFs. The DAFs definitely struggle when running at 40t+, I’ve got one of 5 6x4s, the stuff I move rarely gets above 38t, I enjoy my days on the whole.

The 2 Volvos were recently replaced by DAF 450 CFs, cast offs from another firm that found them unsuitable I’m told, lower spec and struggle when empty, let alone loaded. I did one load with one of them 43t+, I did not enjoy it in the slightest! Everyone that I’ve spoken to that has driven then has a similar view, simply not up to the job we do. So one driver has quit (going back to a previous employer on more money and has told me that it was the final straw for him), the other has switched to an Axor (63 plate)(driver that’s quit also said he’d probably have stayed if that option was there for him), solid vehicles, well suited to the job, leaving the 2 450s up for grabs, if any of the pool drivers fancies misery every day.

If I hated the vehicle then I’d be looking for a change to something ‘better’ or be off elsewhere too, the money certainly isn’t good enough to turn up every day if I hated any part of the set up.

Well I’ll jump in as I’ve been driving a 67 platr DAF CF today… And it’s pretty shocking. It has no acceleration at all. It struggles to maintain it’s speed if it even looks at a hill. The interiour is okay but pretty basic. But the worst part is the gearbox… It’s just attrocious. It left me stranded a few times - and I only felt really comfortable using the crawler reverse gear as it’s like an on and off switch of jerkiness. It’s a 6 speed auto and is total garbage.

Im assuming thats an 18 ton rigid with the litttle ■■■■■■■ lump?

Yeah 18ter. Looks the part from outside. And inside is okay. But it drives like garbage. I’ve driven enough trucks now to realise I’d rather a 62/3 plate DAF than this thing… Even MAN are better.

No idea of engine etc. Just no it was a DAF CF 230 - and was pants.

Volvo is still my favourite. Best truck I have ever driven was my first ever shift - and I crashed it.

Don`t ask Albion about “frilly Turkish” stuff! Loads of rumours already abound about Albion and suchlike.
And all the rumours were started by her!!

Egyptian m’dear, Egyptian

Apologies.
I confess to a distinct lack of expertise.

But am more than willing to be educated.

Just remember you started what might be the most off topic thread wander ever. YouTube:

Best Belly dance Ever - Randa Kamel

Didem Bellydance 2009 (Turkish)

Should keep you entertained for five minutes, first one is Egyptian, awful costume tho… Sorry can’t link, on phone.

Final Straw.

@ Albion, thanks for the pointers. Definitely seems a subject that requires further study! Finding the link early Sat morning is getting the weekend off to a different start than expected.

Many on here would remember that a 220 at 32 ton with a manual split box,no power steering, was a dream machine in their day.

Glad to see I wasn’t the only person to chuckle when I read that  . Bless, he’s only been driving since October 2017 though  .

For me, I’ll drive any old heap so long as it has a good limiter and the night heater works  . I’d tramp all week in an FL10 if the money was right and those 2 boxes were ticked. You can give me the newest flashest Volvo 750 with all the bells and whistles and a La-Z-Boy recliner as the driving seat but if it only does 52mph you can shove it up your arse.

Years ago back in the 70s a certain big Company from Barrow had a depot in Felixstowe they offered £28 and a BRAND NEW Scania our lads laughed as we was on £40 plus for driving Big Js and Seddons

Press the button on the end of the stalk on the right hand side and turn ECO mode off.

Find it funny the fulltime monkeys quitting their jobs because they don’t know how to drive a truck properly.

Cheers Conor - didn’t know about that. If/when I get another chance to drive one of these I’ll do that and see if it makes much difference.

Depends on the exact model and how it is specced/set-up.
Out of the factory, one touch on ours (65 plates) would turn off “Eco”, and a second touch would switch into “Manual”. But any lifting of the right foot off the loud pedal and it would revert back to “Auto” with often a rapid upchange of gears. Horrible things. The driver, sat in the cab can see upcoming hazards, the computer programmer working in Eindhoven 2 years previously cant. Why provide a "Man" setting only to have the truck override the driver choice? Anyway we had a software change so they do as theyre told now: no “Eco” settings, and if switched into “Man” they stay there. Better, than standard, but still clunky changes.

Are you getting paid enough ? Are the holiday pay and benefits acceptable ? That is what matters. If the pay and conditions are good I would drive anything (Except an old Ford Cargo  ).
