Ferry Bookings

just a hyperthetical question…

when you have a ferry booking for an internal ferry, like stranraer to ireland or pompey to the isle of wight, do they book a single passenger or is it just a case of how many are in the cab when you turn up? do the company pay for passengers or is it just one price for wagon and passenger/s?

just asking as a mate has asked what it is like driving a wagon and at the moment i am mainly doing to the isle of wight and back (boring) but it would be a chance of him seeing it raw so to speak, and was hopoing that it would just be a case of turn up and off we go, obviously clearing it with the boss first!

I’d say it would depend entirely on the route and ferry co. Some will accept a 2nd driver, or at least they used to on X channel, with others they’ll need to be booked in and there’ll be an extra charge. Will also depend if its a day boat or over night.

Ferry operators aren’t as keen on giving free food away as they were some years back.

For Stranraer/Cairnryan additional passengers cost extra. Think its about £20 each way for each passenger, normally added to your bosses account. Don’t need to book in advance unless its an old cargo boat which can only take a dozen drivers.

Afew yr back did I`sle Of Wight a few times took the wife once no xtra, but like I say few yrs back.

I paid for CalMac Ferry ticket for my girl, when she first time went with me on Hebrides, but then on the way I was told, that it wasn’t necessary, so never paid again for anybody. Don’t had free meal for her though

Also - I was crossing the channel on the lorries as a hitchhiker, never had any probs.

I was even once going trough EuroTunnel and there was three of us in the cab - no probs.

I think they are paid so much for the lorry, that they don’t bother about some extra head on board… But they need extra passenger to be reported for safety reasons.

Clutching an invoice from Wightlink in my sticky little mitts, and the second driver cost a fiver each way on the Portsmouth Fishbourne route.

Just asked my boss and he doesn’t pay any extra when Little Harry comes with me on the DOCA ferries in the school holidays.

thanks for that fella’s, i will have a look into it and let yo uknow.

cheers

It’s no problem turning up at Portsmouth with a passenger so as long as your boss is ok with it then you will be fine.

Hide them in the bed and close your curtains if you have them…

Send him to the On -Board duty free shop and time how long it takes him to realise.

Yea, when I used to use the Sally Line out of Ramsgate when I was on for Romac in the 1980’s, we always used to tell first-trip Dutchmen etc about the duty-free shop on the Woolwich Ferry.

doesnt make any odds to me,because you will never get me on a ferry…
im ■■■■ scared of ships ,which is strange, cos my dad, grandad, and great grandad, were all merchant seamen,i cant even drive round immingham dock without feeling woosy!!.

You could ofcourse make an appointment with someone who specialises in phobias, then, intime, contact a ferry co. explaining the situation and asking if you could be shown around the ship, with specific reference to all the safety equipment/drills, whilst ■■■■■■■ in harbour.
