Ferries to Split, Croatia

Hi all, was just wondering if anybody here has used the ferry from Ancona to Split?

Have run a search on google and have come up with some companies, IE Jadrolina, SNAV, Blue fin etc.One seems to be a catamaran for cars and foot passengers but the others are proper ferries.

Any input would be appreciated.

Cheers, bullitt.

I used to use the Ancona-Split ferries quite regularly between 1998-2001.

I mostly went with Jadrolinia but also used Adriatica on occasion.

Both companies ran an efficient service and the ships were both clean and reliable although not in there first flush of youth. Also at the time it wasn’t a ro-ro service so backing on was the name of the game. As with the greek boats it’s best to ask where they want the truck because if you try to follow there directions it takes about half an hour.

Shipping from Ancona was no more hassle than if you were getting a boat to greece although split was an education due to the fact that the linkspan ran straight onto the main harbour road so when backing on it took 2-3 shunts just to get lined up with the linkspan during which time the traffic had built up quite well and they would all lean on there horns.

Things might have changed now but I do remember one of jadrolinia’s ferries having a height clearance of just 4m and getting a volvo FH with GA fridge on involved droping all the air out of unit and trailer, taking off roof ariels and even removing the flap on top of the exhaust stack it was that tight. With the earlier FH (97 model) you also had to leave the ignition switched on other wise as soon as you switched off the unit suspension would reset to running height and the exhaust stack would touch the pipework running along the roof of the cargo deck. Unfortunately I found this out through experience. On the later 2000 model it was possible to dump the air and switch off without it resetting.

Another thing if your take a pride in your vehicle is to make sure you stay on deck while they chain down because they can be a bit enthusiastic and have been known to hook chains into the slots on wheel rims and accross unit chassis if left to there own devices.

Enjoy croatia it’s a beautiful place

Cheers for the info Niel. Sadly though i wont be in a truck this time. Will probably be in a car. :unamused:
I spent a couple of years over there in the early 90`s and me and a mate were thinking of going back to see whats changed. We used to get down to Split fairly often but were based in the town of Metkovic, a small market town on the Croatian-Bosnian border about an hour and half further down the coast.

Sounds like getting on the Ferry in a truck was fun :open_mouth:

Cheers once again.
