Fell out of the truck

Normally the trucks I drive have three steps, but yesterday I was put into some type of Mercedes which had four steps which was fine, until I forgot about the fourth step when climbing down hitting fresh air where I expected the ground to be and going arse over ■■■ in the yard. Luckily no-one saw me. :stuck_out_tongue:

To make things worse, it wasn’t even the first time I’ve done this so I’m wondering if anyone can make me feel a bit better by admitting they’ve done this too?

Good job you weren’t in the magnum, that would be some fall, seen it happen a few times not a good sight, harry at your age you should be looking before you leap

I’ve lost count of the number of times I have missed the 4th step on a Merc and scraped my shins

I did it the other day, a kind of backwards star jump onto the tarmac. It’s just one of the things in a long list of things I swore I wouldn’t do, but have done, sometimes more than once. It seems I have to go though an initiation with each new vehicle.

Yup…join the club Harry

Yep and always when it involves a different truck. Whether it be gouging my leg on the way up or missing a step on the way down I’ve done both so you’re not alone.

I’ve also missed a step getting down form the catwalk too

.

I have missed a step before now but even more embarasing i have been looking for the extra step when i was stood on the ground lol

Ive once almost forgotten I was in a truck and just ‘leapt’ out then thought, oh bugger, and hit the ground pretty hard doing my knees no good whatsoever, I think I missed 2 steps!

Ive also fallen headfirst out of a trailer, and luckily I had a tight grip of the strap, so apart from almost ripping my shoulder out its socket it sort of broke my fall!

This is… I mean, appears… to be a common incident…

If only there was a system in place to ensure that drivers climbed in an out of the cab securely…

It was when I changed motors from a Scania 93 (yes that long ago) to a Volvo FH10

I got out of the cab where I was delivering when, I got to the ground quicker than I thought with an audience on hand to witness my spectacular arrival !

I got up, pride severely dented and the inevitable Jests from the guys.

There was a tiny bit of sympathy for my plight but, we got on with getting the load tipped and the day continued on !

I’ve missed the step ring many times in the past. Also slipped between the cab and the body of an Ergo cab rigid when climbing to get on top of the load. I can’t get on the back of a trailer these days unless it’s got steps and a handle.

And a “thank you” from me to the law to fit side guards to trailers. Makes loading and strapping timber a lot easier.

No not that I can remember , but I’ve fallen out of a few trailers , down some concrete steps ( hospital job , stiches ) , fell over in yard on black ice ( knocked out ) told I needed to be aware of my surroundings In future , to be fair as the years have passed my legs don’t always seem to be on the same wavelength as my brain ,age I guess
I did see a lad engrossed in his phone walk straight into a lamp post on Grantham high street the other week , my ribs hurt , my mrs & a few were looking after him , I got a bollocking off the mrs afterwards , but it was funny
I’m sure I’d of laughed watching you Harry , but if I’d of done what you did & someone laughed at me there’d be hell on

Yes, I drive a FM and sometimes I have to use a FH when mine is off the road. I either scrape my shin or fall down the steps because of that extra step!

On Monday I was in a CF rigid, one full load collection on tail lift which wouldn’t then pack away as the suspension had dropped, stood on the step to turn on ignition and level the suspension, then exited somehow missing the ground and any lower step that may or may not have been there, finishing on my backside.

Awaiting loading at a large flower and plant packers off with boots feet on steering wheel. Got tap on cab saying ready now driver, slid boots on went climb down steps but had got pins and needles in one of legs didn’t realise how numbness would affect me. Straight down on concrete in front of a crowd. Only thing severely bruised was my ego

Ford d series and bedford tk’s, hand on wing and jump, scania 110 , well it didn’t quite work the same, hand on wing , which wasn’t there and crumpled heap on floor.
Ended up on my back middle of colchester high couple of years ago, another scania but this time my knee stopped working climbing in and bingo another crumpled heap on the floor.

My “everyday” truck was a 32T Scania 420, it only had two steps, getting out of the vehicle I used to simply jump out forwards as it wasn’t that high.

The first day of my Class 1 training was in some Volvo (can’t remember which model), this had about four or five steps up to the cab.

On day 1 I did my usual trick of jumping out forwards… :open_mouth:
I didn’t do it on day 2, my knees were complaining too much

Saw a guy step off the back of a petrol tanker if that counts. One minute I was speaking to him the next thing he had disappeared.
