The Quiet man
Farewell my Lovely, Robert Mitchum being my all time favourite actor

For anyone who’s never seen it I heartily recommend a film called “Dead man’s shoes” the ultimate low budget British movie. Superbly directed, superbly shot and above all superbly acted.

Some good ones coming in, especially Doctor Zhivago, some more are :

Night train to Lisbon, with Jeremy Irons, it’s about the butcher of Lisbon or the ruthless dictator Zalazar in Portugal.

The longest ride, with Scott Eastwood ,a twist in the plot and a real tear jerker if the Mrs is watching it.

Midnight Express, it has to up there as one of the classics, Turkish prison drama.

The Mule.

Gran Torino.

Heart break ridge.

Sully.

Full metal jacket.

Falling down, Michael Douglas at his best performance.

Fatal attraction, the famous bunny boiler scene.

The war of the roses.

The money pit.

The power of the dog.

Black dog.

Parasite.

Table 19.

Enemy of the state.

Unlawful entry, with the brilliant Ray Liotta and Kurt Russell.

Copland.

First blood, forget the sequels , this is the best one.( With his commanding officer de-briefing the county sheriff who started a mini war against one man who was trained for escape and evasion and the line of: He was taught to eat food that would make a billy goat puke.
The sheriff cites he is hunting Rambo but the commander berates back with : No,he is hunting you)

Breakdown , Kurt Russell and J.T Walsh has the truck driver who kidnapped his wife.

Carlitos way.

A Bronx tale.

Heist.

Ronin.

Men of honour.

Backdraft.

Only the brave.

No country for old men.

Double jeopardy.

Heat.

Scent of a woman.

Sunshine.

Kramer versus Kramer.

Papillon.

Donnie Brasco.

The bridges of Madison county.

The three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri.

And one of my favourite films is Fargo.(The wood chipper machine)

One of my favourites i forgot about.

The Constant Gardner, indeed Ralph Fiennes seldom gets involved with anything trashy, and almost anything from the pen of LeCarre will be a gem.

Speaking of LeCarre, i have the original DVD’s of the real Tinker Tailor and Smiley’s People (serial form starring Alec Guinness in the role of Smiley, not the wholly inferior recent film version of TTSS), every other year for the past 20 years without fail i treat myself to a couple of weekends rewatching these brilliant series.
Made by and for the BBC you know, as was Blott on the Landscape, which i also have and must dig out for a re-run, the Beeb used to make quite brilliant atmospheric drama and comedy programs back in the day before the wokesters from the long march through the institutions took over and ruined it.

One more film springs to mind, Leon.

edit, oh and the other day (probably Netflix) we watched a fairly recent fim called Cop Shop, a shoot 'em up jobbie worth the time.
The star actress i haven’t seen before, Alexis Louder, keep an eye out for that name cos she’s going places, a good role anyway but hell fire she carries it off well, the girl has it.

Scum
Kez
French connection
One flew over the cuckoo’s nest
Get Carter
Zulu
Italian job
Mississippi burning
National lampoon’s Christmas vacation
Planes trains and automobiles
Casino
Goodfellas
Terminator 1 and 2
Predator 1
Robocop

Cuckoo’s nest, brilliant film, I should have added that classic to the list along with The Shining.

And I can’t believe I forgot Planes trains and automobiles :

The pig farmer scene when he collects them in the pick up truck is pure comedy gold :
Train don’t run out of Wichita unless you are a hog or a cattle , people’s train run outa Stubbville.

The car rental scene at the airport, the genius of Martin.

Ronin
Heat
Nikita (original French version)
Platoon
Where Eagles Dare
Bloodsport
Escape
21 Bridges
Stuber
Extraction
12 Strong
Rise of the Footsoldier
Shooter
Contraband
Lone Survivor

Dave

Good choice there Foxy, the alien film Paul is not bad.

And Matthew McConaughey in the three hour long epic and mind spinning Interstellar.

Mud.

The Lincoln Lawyer.

Dallas buyers club.

Weekend at Bernie’s.

The wolf of Wall Street.

Oh yeah alien films - cannot forget this classic:

Life

Dave

This one is an absolute must see:

Star man , with Jeff Bridges.

I’m surprised that Blade Runner hasn’t been mentioned.

Kudos to Juddian for naming my personal number one; Leon.

The original Blade Runner with Rutger Hauer or the second film?
But both good films.

Slumdog Millionaire.
Lion with Dev Patel.

Original. I’ve not seen the remake. It has to be the Directors cut too.

Fistful of Dynamite
Gone in 60 seconds ( original ).
Emperor of the North.
Boxcar Bertha.
Someone mentioned Robert Mitcham Anzio defined his career for me.
The Wild Bunch.
Pay Garrett and Billy the Kid.
First half of Two Lane Black Top.
Vanishing Point viewed as the car being the star and a parable about control freak authority crushing freedom .
Puppet on a Chain just for the speed boat chase scene.
More recently Threads and Melancholia just for the change for disaster movies that don’t have the predictable happy ending.
Just some.

The original was the best one.
Hauer was very good in The Hitcher as he tied his victim up to the back of a tractor unit and another one and revved his engine and drove away splitting her body in half.

i like the old spaghetti western’s! along with…
The Long Riders (Jesse James story,David Carradine is my favourite)
Josey Wales
and any films inc. the American Civil War.
and Zulu was an epic film.
