Don’t know if this has been done on this forum before.
What are/was your favourate journey or trip in a lorry in the UK.
Mine as a kid was riding shotgun down to Avonmouth in the late 1950’s,before the Severn Bridge was built, going from Kington loaded with grain in sacks via Gloucester and down the A38 to Avonmouth for animal feed, and sometimes on to the Vitamealo works at Keynsham to top up the load with flaked maize and return to kington.
Later as a driver I always liked going anywhere over the Cotswold’s.I remember seeing them testing Concorde which was built at Filton and flown up over the Cotswold’s.
Cheers Dave.
Dave we must have been there together, as Avonmouth was one of mine with my Dad delivering Rootes or Jaguar cars in the late 50’s early 60’s, always remember having to get down in the footwell so the copper didn’t see us. Harwich was another favorite on a Saturday morning.

I was OK after the age of 12 as we only went into BOCM or Spillers.
Cheers Dave.
Used to love going into Rowntrees with my Dad, used to come out with a big bag of Goodies! As a driver I used to like Scotland, the higher the better. One trip I went to Wellington, Somerset, mid Summer and got there just before tea time. Parked near a pub and sat having a pint watching the Cricket on the green, typical English Summers day you see on the telly, lovely, just the birds singing the only noise and the distant howzat and wack of the ball!
Franky.
Anywhere in Scotland, especially Turriff. Also British Cellophane at Barrow,Glaxo Ulverston,BSC Workington and Marchon Whitehaven - when you could go through the lakes.North Sea Gas plant at Bacton Norfolk,in fact anywhere in Norfolk.ISR Hythe side of New Forest,Canvey Island Essex and the steady run back to Sheffield via Brentwood,Harlow, onto the A10,A14 then A1 at Alconbury on a saturday, instead of that bloody Norf Circla and M1.Easington near Hull Gas plant and Conoco Gas plant Theddlethorpe Lincs were quite pleasant runs.In fact anywhere away from Purfleet/Dagenham/Coryton/Scunthorpe/Immingham/Teesside/Tyneside/Lancs/Cheshire/Wirral/West Riding. Didn’t mind South Wales or Birmingham area and of course Sheffield -well who could not like the Centre of the Universe.
Forgot Carless at Harwich, via the old A604 from Alconbury through Cambridge,Haverhill,Halstead and Colchester.
From Lockerbie ish across the borders through Maxton to Grantshouse in the 60s sitting on the engine hump of a LAD reiver float.or down into England to preston mart over shap.
Dad driving, mum on passenger seat ,me and my brother on the hump.

I loved going anywhere with dad when a bairn and driving one or two in Scotland Orban when you had to go round Glen Coe as there was a weight limit on the loch side road, Invergordon was another nice run to the submarine yard and one of the nicest views anywhere was on the old road when you looked down on Stonehaven. I always enjoyed my trips into Europe and when things went wrong you had to sort them out and most of the time I did it was when you used “T” forms and you always had a chat while waiting at the borders. I must have enjoyed the European work as 25 years later I like to do coach holidays in Europe now but they do a lot of motorway running but some go onto the old roads and one trip we came back from Italy via the Brammer Pass to Innisbruck through Switzerland having a stop in Lucerne which was very enjoyable.
I used to go with the old chap to Avonmouth as well but our journey was from Reading down the old A4, that would be early 1960’s I suppose to Silcocks and BOCM. Haven’t really got a favourite trip as we never travelled far from base but I enjoyed running from Ashbourne to St Clears with tarmac and Cardiff docks with similar material. Did the occasional run to Sevenoaks as well which was a nice steady drive. I guess that going over Long Hill early on a summer’s morning just as the sun was coming up took some beating, until you reached High Lane and Hazel Grove and ran into heavy traffic.
hi one and all
new on here …i had many favourite runs but i use to like travalling over the beacons on a nice sunny day and then down the wye valley towards leominster…i use to work out of the abbey port talbot has a owner driver and living in craven arms in those days gone by…not sure if you remember me dave but allan coxall will…hope lifes ok for you

my favourite trip was the reverse of cbl carrier’s . down the wye valley , over the beacons , down to the bit of m4 at morriston and on to llanelli . did that run 5 or 6 times a week and never got tired of it . i bet cbl was one of those steel wagon we used to meet on the back road from craven arms ( pull your mirrors in and hope for the best ) .cheers , dave
Being regularly round central London in the 70’s 80’s 90’s when the ladies dressed to please, needed a second man with you so you didn’t miss the best views…
Best job having to sit outside the main road store 200 yds from Clapham underground from 6am to 9am then unload for an hour…hours sleep and then clock some of the best totty anywhere in the country, all paid, superb job…
I used to enjoy going to the Texaco and Esso refineries in West Wales (gas oil dye, split load between the two), always return empty, needed a couple of loads of derv and one of spirit to get the tank clean after that stuff.
And Plymouth in the summer, down, tip, back up to Taunton for a lovely evening out.
Happy days, long gone.
hi rigsby
about the sheep…never seem to remember me wellies…it was up the wye valley and your going down…mistake first post but ya know getting on abit now…the reason i liked it was it was quiet and abit of scenery…i used the back road now and then but you`d got to pull your mirrors in like you say
regards
Load a 40ft Seatrain container, driving for Humber McVeigh’s Manchester, take down to Felixstowe via Alconbury, good digs at the Routemaster at the Docks, one off and one on,back to Manchester or at least North following day, usually as a convoy,as Humber McVeighs Sheffield would also be tipping and reloading there, good days.

It would indeed. A 3 axle Foden unit, 350 ■■■■■■■ with a Fuller, and and ancient 3 axle tank. It was good work, we had 2 motors on the job (Dave Irvine drove the other). It must have been a good paying job for our leader, it was always empty return.
The dye used to be manufactured by Williams Chemicals, Heckmondwike. We did all the UK refineries.
