Fatal two-lorry collision on M6: can you help?

Warwickshire Police are appealing for any hauliers who may have witnessed a fatal collision between two lorries on the M6 motorway on the morning of 11 June between J1 and the Catthorpe Interchange.

LGV driver Scott Bridges, 45, from Flitwick, Bedfordshire, sustained fatal injuries in the accident and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

He was driving a Renault artic with a white cab and blue curtain-sided trailer in the livery of Sibley Haulage, which was in a collision with a Volvo artic with a white cab and while trailer in a Morrison’s supermarket livery.

The driver of the Morrison’s lorry was not physically injured, but suffered from shock as a result of the incident.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was travelling along the M6 in either direction between 11am — 11.30am who may have seen the two lorries that were travelling southbound, prior to the collision taking place.

In particular, they would like information relating to the manner of driving of both lorries before the incident.

If you can provide any information, contact PC Geoff Bell in the Major Investigation Unit, Roads, on 01788 853890, or via 101 the police non-emergency number.

R.I.P drive deepest condolences to family and friends.
That junction needs looking at. There seems to be an accident there every day and serious ones at that. Yes some driver error must be partially accountable but that road lay out has got to be one of the worst. Its about time it was altered then those that have lost there lives there have not done so in vain.

It is one of the most ridiculous junctions on the network, a busy motorway suddenly stops with a set of lights, a roundabout and a narrow bridge before continuing onto a fast Dual Carriageway.

Instead of fannying about with the olympics, a flyover could have been built for very little money in comparison

What IS it about this junction, over and above other accident blackspots?

Is the blackspot where the traffic lights are, downhill on the left in this pic, or is it slow moving lorries moving over to the right lane, only to get rammed by someone in the camera’s position who may or may not be on autopilot?

Then there’s the right hand bend just out of sight ahead, and the bridge over the M1 still has scaffolding up doesn’t it? (Not shown in this old pic)

:frowning: RIP.

Poor lad.
RIP drive and condolences to his family.
As others have said, this jct is a right pain, needs improving asap.
Last 2 times I’ve travelled down the M6 to pick up the M1,two idiots in cars have left it to the last seconds to cut me up,to join the Q for the Catthorpe Interchange, causing me to swerve, :imp: luckily nothing came of it ( this time ).

It looks so harmless there doesn’t it?
The problem being in rush hour when the traffic is queuing back to junction one, either in fog, rain or bright sunshine. drivers are cutting in at the last moment, pulling out because they are in the wrong lane or from inattention and excess speed. It is badly designed, it is badly signed and for someone sailing down a motorway from ■■■■■■■ or Cornwall they do not expect to come across standing traffic, they should but clearly they don’t.

A friend of mine works that junction as a paramedic and you wouldn’t believe some of the things she has seen while saving the lives of others. If you are heading south onto the M1 it should be straightforward, the problem comes with the traffic heading East on the A14 or North on the M1.

It cannot come a minute too soon!

R I P to the driver.I would have a guess that an high percentage of crashes there are caused by drivers leaving it till as late as possible to get over for the a14 and more than likely drivers who commute there everyday and do it everyday.I have even seen drivers pull out of the queue back on to the two outside lanes only to pull back into a gap further down, they should be prosecuted if they got caught and it could be proved they new where they were going.

same junction isnt it…

The design is ridiculous from all approaches to this interchange! T
he A14 needs to be a Motorway and the interchange needs to be rethought! There is enough RF money collected each year to do this easily! And it should be a major priority due to the amount of accidents, deaths and the heavy use by LGVs! Saying that it is real easy overnight!
I thought the replacement of the old M6/M1 bridge was done to make space for a new bridge to run parallel for the M1/A14 link?

Yes but my newspaper is newer than yours :stuck_out_tongue:

It is back on but not until 2015

Thoughts are with family and friends of those involved in this accident. R.I.P.

Isnt it about time a wise driver (or a group of them - TN?) looked to see if the Department of Transport could be sued for corporate manslaughter as a result of a deficient road design? I’m sure with all our helpful Health and Safety legislation, a case could be found for the DTP to be forced to correct the road design

Rikki, and all at Road Transport Media - how about it?

At the end of the day it is still one driver running into another one, it happens all day long on a lot of different roads that are not a bottleneck like this.

If the road was marked up wrong or it was causing damage to vehicles, you may have a point.

If I suggested the speed limit should be lowered to 30mph there would be uproar from those who want to make more sausages.

this stretch should be controlled the same way the M42 is controlled with speed/live camera’s from junction one down to the roundabout.

I wouldn’t want to see any more of those control sections, in my opinion that road is bloody dangerous too, with everyone vying for position while doing the same speed.
