i find it strange how a drawbar trailer behind a lorry imposes a small amount weight on the lorry around half a tonne yet these farm trailers have the axles at the back with a eye very similar to that of a lorry trailer putting a lot of weight on it .
It’s quite clearly on its way over before the drawbar snaps, you only have to look at the twisting of the towing eye. It always seems to be a fendt that is in these accidents?? Extra weigh and speed looks a little scary when you see that
James
And I read today in one of the transport mags that legislation is being passed to allow farm tractors to carry more weight and also raise the speed limit.■■?
At least now that they are upping the speed limit on tractor’s, and also allowing them to gross around the 30 tonne mark, the trailers will be better maintained…
Pete.
I wonder if wall weighbridge was open at the time?
Not so sure it’s just an unhappy coincidence the drawbar broke on a roundabout.

Comes down to a bloke with a cutting torch chopping through a lorry chassis and welding two pieces of channel to a v, no calculation for weight imposed ect ect, should need to be type approved I reckon if they want to drag this ■■■■■ around the highways.

They have upped the combination weight but still pinned the max trailer weight to 18 ton odd, so will allow heavier tractors on the front which should be better in my opinion.

On this sort of thing though isn’t it down to off road use and tipping why the axles aren’t in the centre?
Yes but thats short ,it’s these long home made cut down artic trailer ones that are imposing the weight on the tractor back axle .
you want weight on the drawbar to aid the tractor in getting grip
This is true but there’s a limit needed by the look of it .

Is it me or is that drawbar bent in relation to the chassis?
Parked on a slope?
Sorry, that could be read as a racist joke (a ‘Clarkson’)…not intended!

it’s a 7 series fendt, probably a 724, they will do 55kph flat out, the same as the vast majority of tractors on the road, it’s not a big or heavy tractor, the 8 and 9 series are and they can do 65kph

There in lies the problem, 55 kph 37.5% over the new rased speed limit on a trailer that’s was cobbled together in a farm workshop by someone that thinks they know what they were doing!! Rediculous

Do you think so? Is there any legislation regarding farmers vehicles to have a regular safety check the same as commercial vehicles and trailers? And are these home made trailers subject to an MoT? Judging by some I’ve seen with less than sufficient lights on I very much doubt it!

No I do not (hence the smiley!) and I can see trouble ahead to be honest. I saw a trailer that a local farmer’s lad knocked up a year or two ago and admittedly he doesn’t go fast or far with it but I didn’t rate its safety or roadworthiness much.
Pete.
