Farmer Giles Gets One From Behind

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-ox … e-17589458
It had to happen at some point; Seems stupid to drive tractors/combines/foragers etc along the A34 when there are quieter roads alongside it.

would not be anything to do with someone not concentrating would it :unamused: , lucky it was not a broken down bus full of …
or would they be stupid too

Seems stupid to drive in the back of a forager too :unamused:

I agree, not exactly small was it? I wonder what the drivers’ excuse was? The A34 really needs to be given motorway status and take away all the slow moving stuff. I heard someone say they saw a loon going up the A34 towards Bicester the other day on a mobility scooter. :open_mouth: I’ve seen traction engines on there and that is just bloody stupid/inconsiderate.

Poor old Swampy couldn’t be everywhere at once, he was too busy in Newbury to sort out the urban section through Pear Tree.

However Farmer Giles is quite within his rights to drive down a dual carriageway, the muppet who rear ended him should be suspended from the trees.

I would be thinking more along the lines of reducing the speed limit to make it safer for all road users, you cant just make every road into a motorway

I bet there was plenty of fresh manure in both drivers’ pants

In the case of the A34 there should be a no slow moving vehicles order, like on the A45 near Northampton. Mind you it’s pretty daft to drive into the back of one in clear conditions.

for a start it’s not a combine harvester & it then reads it collided with a lorry ? looks more like the lorry collided with it

To Joe Public (and me) that’s a combine harvester… And yes, I was surprised that the lorry driver was not getting the blame, maybe the agricultural machine was reversing? :open_mouth:

like a lot of others in rural areas this is the time of year I swap artic keys for tractor keys.

You think you see ■■■■ driving when in a wagon…try driving a tractor :imp: :imp: wagon drivers are generally sound, except for a few clowns on the John Miller timber rigs and a couple of arrisoles on AW Jenkinsons bulkers.

If you go into the back of something it is your fault SIMPLES.

The machine in the pic is a forage harvester with what looks like a maize header on it, max speed is probably 20mph. tractors have max speeds of 14 or 24 or 30 mph. The contractor drivers among us try to let traffic past, often pulling into laybys when they’re not packed with wagons on their ‘45’. A little consideration by all makes everyones job a little easier.

Just going off thread talking about slow vehicles on major rds,yrs ago when i was coming off the m11north onto a14 i used to regularly see an electric milk float running [5.00-5.30am]fair do,s he had an orange light flashing but sooner him than me.
regards dave.

There used to be one on the A40 during morning rush who’d never pull over. It was said he had an attitude with people as they’d ruined his job by going to the supermarkets for milk so he thought this was getting his own back. Funny thing is he’s since quit due to abuse from motorists.

That’s the last thing it needs, it’s a trunk road. Majority of car drivers are already travelling too slowly on the A34, this is half the problem. Apart from a small section past Oxford, the whole thing is 70mph from M40 to M4. It would run much smoother if everyone would put their foot down and get on with it. It would also benefit from better cooperation between HGV’s overtaking each other, but thats another story

I passed this accident on the way up last night. Right mess. Though in typical BBC style, hanging from a bridge was a bit of an over-exaggeration. :unamused: He was resting just off the road on the verge, and clear of the span.

If you are going to get hit from behind with a lorry, an agricultural vehicle is probably the thing to be in when it happens.

A34 needs major investment in my opinion, as the most important north south route between the m25 and M5. Though I read in a local paper a few months ago that all plans to improve it had been canned due to budget cuts.

Any sort of an accident/breakdown on there, has to result in a lane closure, which brings the whole thing to a crushing halt, usually in both directions, for hours, and it’s a slow old slog to bypass it in some areas. Other areas it just isn’t possible.

It needs hard shoulder all the way along it, so the traffic can be kept moving, and to be honest, I would suggest binning all the laybys too, if only there was somewhere else for all the trucks to go that need to overnight around there.

Bring it up to motorway standards and build a dedicated truckstop halfway along maybe?

Not really, seatbelts are no used very often in agri machines, and the plod can’t tell if you have one on or not as they are lap belts. Due to the speed difference it has happened where the driver of the agri machine has been catapulted out of the windscreen on impact.
