Idling in the sunshine in my garden chair this afternoon, my mind wondered to those countless old pubs that stand in - or next to - established truck stops. The old Gate Inn at Dunkirk on the A2 springs to mind. But they all had ordinary pub names like the King’s Head, the Old Vic or the Wheatsheaf.
What, then, if we could rename them after our industry: give them names that would reflect the world of those who used them? Here is a short list I’ve just made up, to start the ball rolling.
The Suzie & Stepring
The Scania Centurion
The TIR-cord & Belly-tank
The Leyland Marathon
The Visor & Kysor
Knight of the Road
The Old Eric Vick
The Eff Eighty Eight
The Middle-Easter
The Maudslay Maharajah
The Splendid ERF
The Scammell Crusader
The Trucker’s Respite
The Black Bedford
The Atki Borderer
The Acking ?ucktross
The Forty-five Off
The Dolly & Flysheet
The Fifth-wheel & Kingpin
The Cantrail & Rave
The TIR-tilt & Side-box
The Spotted Cow in Huddersfield comes to mind from the 50s, Plus The Kirkgate, I had many a good night in both of these old Pubs, The Spotted Cow is long gone now, I think the Kirkgate may still be going, The good old days, Regards Larry.
