Fantasy Fleet

OK chaps, just suppose that I have a yard full of 12-metre TIR-tilts ready to roll and a contract with a dedicated service with lots of ■■■■■■■ back-up all the way down the road.

Suppose, too, that I decide to choose a mixed fleet so that I can select the best in the end. However, each unit MUST meet the following requirements:

  1. ■■■■■■■ 14-litre straight six
  2. Fuller 9-speed
  3. Left-hand-drive
  4. Sleeper cab

From the evidence that I have, only the following 9 units can be included in this fleet:
ERF MGC (fixed 5MW cab)
ERF NGC
ERF B-series
ERF C-series
Seddon-Atkinson 400
Leyland Marathon
KW K100
International Transtar
International CO9670

There are others it is TEMPTING to include, but there is no evidence of them having been built with THIS COMBINATION.

For example, Barrieros Dodge did offer Fuller 9-speed with its Chrysler engine and a ■■■■■■■ 350 in LHD, but what gearbox did it offer with the ■■■■■■■ (I’ve checked the spec-sheets A-J posted, but it doesn’t say)?

Freightliner and White offer LHD units with 9-speed Fullers and ■■■■■■■ 300s, but they were V8s I believe.

Bedford’s LHD TM had a 9-speed ‘box but the optional ■■■■■■■ was the 10-litre, not the 14-litre.

ERF made LHD E-series units with the 14-litre ■■■■■■■ but I have never found any evidence of one with a 9-speed Fuller, even though they were an option in the RHD version.

Seddon-Atkinson made LHD 401s with the right ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ combo, but I can only find evidence of day-cab military versions.

Seddon-Atkinson also made Cab-tec Stratos with all these characteristics but I cannot find any evidence that they were combined to my required spec.

Foden made RHD 4000s with the right ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ spec, but their LHD ones had 13-speed Fullers and CAT engines.

The Ford Cargo had the L10, not the 14-litre.

Ford’s Transcontinental had 9-speed Fuller/14-ltr ■■■■■■■ as standard in RHD form, but I can’t find an example of a LHD Transon with a 9-speed Fuller.

Leyland’s LHD Roadtrains had 9-speed Fullers but they all seemed to have Rolls Royce or TL12 power.

So you see, this is a mine-field! See what detective work you can do. Below, I will post my photograghic evidence for the top 9 below.

Robert

Here is my photo-evidence for the 9 units each with the combination of ■■■■■■■ 14-litre engine, Fuller 9-speed gearbox, left-hand-drive and sleeper cab. Each of these ACTUAL LORRIES fulfil all four criteria. Robert

I’ll drive the c series .

The leyland marathon for me

ERF NGC without any doubts!

My second choice would be the new to be introduced KRUPP on the IAA 1969
of which attached a scalemodel prototype. Despite the fact that a ■■■■■■■
V8 with 320hp was intended…I assume many operators (hilly Germany and
Switzerland/Austria) would prefer the ■■■■■■■ NTC335 with Fuller 9 speed!

Robert I have a transcon with a 9 s fuller

Sorry Robert I’d work for another company with F89’s  Lush, or secondo choice a Scania 141
R Jimski.

Not surprised you would take a f89 jimski

Well done A-J, you’ve perceived my intention to find more examples. I particularly value your contributions to this thread as you have often tried to draw me on this subject and I was less than courteous at times, which I regret. With your ■■■■■■■ knowledge and Eric’s Fuller expertise, we should be able to squeeze another unit into our list!

In theory, we should be able to get: a Seddon-Atkinson 401, a Foden 4000, a Ford Transcontinental, a Leyland Roadtrain or a Barrieros Dodge 300. But I’ve learnt not to assume that just because the combination of characteristics you want exists on paper, they are actually possible (or available)! Look at the problems they had trying to specc a RHD Volvo F89, for example. Technically, of course, anything with a 14-litre ■■■■■■■ in it should be possible to obtain with a 9-speed Fuller, whatever side of the cab the steering wheel, but life doesn’t work like that.

Robert

I appreciate all your replies, chaps, but I wasn’t asking for a vote on the list of units I supplied! I was asking for evidence to support ADDITIONAL examples! I’m afraid Volvo F88s meet none of the criteria I mentioned, other than having a sleeper cab!! Robert

Robert would you not be able to have FTF in that spec.
cheers Johnnie

The Ford W-9000 and CL-9000 come very close to your specs…

I had no idea that Krupp used ■■■■■■■ engines! Is there any evidence that they used the 14-litre with a 9-speed Fuller, though? Robert

A very interesting proposition. Does anyone know whether or not FTF ever used ■■■■■■■ power or 9-speed Fullers? Robert

Good man! I’ll look into this. BTW, I like your C-series ERF preference: probably one of the most modern of the options! Robert
