We went on holiday to Hay on Wye that year and I couldn’t believe that car park. It had bays marked for HGVs only. In Lancashire they put goalposts on what used to be lorry parks so not even a Transit can get on. When I was at school this was signposted “lorry park” and used to get full.

Hi David,
Very rare to see any lorries on the park in Hay On Wye anymore. There are still bays for coaches etc,not many lorries based around Hay anymore.Back over the years a lot of drivers from this area and the Hay area drove for South Wales firms on steel, but most of those firms have gone as have several of the drivers. There are still a few in the Leominster,Ludlow and Craven Arms area driving for Owens of Llanelli who have operators license for those places.
Cheers Dave.

Some more from C W Griffiths.
This must’ve been one of the earliest Cat powered Fodens-Smiths’ first was a D-reg 8 wheeler (D612 PUD)

Hi Nathan,
This one of C W Griffiths was the first around this area. Its quite amusing to look back and recall everyone saying how much power it had, which was true in 1986.Now 300 is not considered enough power in a six wheeler, most of the four wheelers have 310 bhp.
Cheers Dave.

Hello all
HERE ARE A FEW FROM MY SCRAPBOOK
Regards R-JackoHi R-JACKO, ref; the middle pic of the silver and blue foden. Used to see them around a lot in the 90s, mainly ERFs, but do recall seeing the odd Foden.
Were they called Bailey’s transport, where were they from…
…
Hello gunnerheskey
The middle pic i would assume to be a promotional shot. The bottom pic of the Greenwoods Foden they were brought out by Bailey’s of Westbury.

A B- reg with a split-screen? I saw a fair wagon on a D plate a few weeks ago and that had a split too, assumed it was a re-cab job. I thought the splits were stopped around X reg?

Think Smiths first Cat was around the 280/300 bhp mark. My first tipper was an 8 wheel Foden on an F plate and that had a 300 Cat, but by then (2001) most of the 6 wheelers were 340s.
Ivor Duggan’s three six wheeler Fodens all have Cat 400 engines. This one is fitted with greedy boards for carrying stockfeed in the winter.

Being a Foden, you could have what you liked, just about!!
IIRC, the split screen cab life may have been extended by the Army DROPS wagons they built?

Bet they go well, my 345s more than adequate for the job and can outpull the Daf 6 wheelers with 360 motors.

Hi Nathan,
They do pull well.Paul Griffiths had a Foden six wheeler with a 450Cat,a chap from the Craven Arms area has it now.
Cheers Dave.
Could have done with that sort of power when we were knocking around Gore in the early '90’s Dave! We thought 265 Rollers were the “Dogs Danglies” ha ha!
Pete.

When Dad got Smiths first 3000 series with ■■■■■■■ 325, I thought that was powerful as there were still a few ARC constructor 8 wheelers around proclaiming on their grilles, “250 turbocharged”!

Hi Pete & Nathan,
The loads were probably getting to the job just as quick with the Rolls 265 and the ■■■■■■■ 325 as they do with the modern higher powered engines. As you probably remember Pete, they were hauling from the Gore to West Drayton with Foden eight leggers back in the 80’s,and some of them still had Gardner engines, when they got back they did a local to Hereford 44 mile round trip.
Cheers Dave.
