Falling asleep driving

if a driver falls asleep driving and crashes single vehicle accident and admits falling asleep to the police what is the likely course of action taken?

Driving without due care and attention i would guess

Almost certainly driving without due care and attention I would have thought.

He may not lose his licence unless he’s already got points, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was invited to tea and biscuits with the TC.

Why would he be foolish enough to admit to that?

If you are found to be driving tired, you could be charged with careless driving or dangerous driving.

If you cause a death while driving tired, you can be charged with death by dangerous driving, if there is sufficient evidence available. The maximum penalty for death by dangerous driving is 14 years in prison.

No one else was involved, It was a momentary lapse of concentration, Therefore he will most likely get 3-6 points and a small fine.

It beats “I was cooking dinner while watching a movie and opening a can of lager and didn’t have any hands free to steer”.

My worse nightmare to fall asleep at the wheel, id admit to nodding dog syndrome and that is bad enough but I wouldn’t wish it on anybody

the dogs jumping out in front of me has always been my limit then time for a power nap

Maybe he should have called someone on his hands-free to keep him awake  Could Albion prove that it wouldn’t have helped?

Knowing nowt about the reason for this thread, what about sleep apnoea.

The late Patrick Swayze was a driver in a trucking movie and he hallucinated a black dog while tired.
Another thing that happens is while asleep on the bunk for a power nap in the day,you wake up thinking you have driven up the back of a trailer.
A trailer is parked in front of you in the lay by.
You wake up and jump on the brakes in sheer panic. Some drivers see men hanging from trees with parachutes attached.
Shouting, singing, jumping up and down in the seat, throwing cold water on your face does not work while fatiqued.

Still, it would be foolish to admit what you did, end of the day they have to prove what you did, avoiding some thing like an animal would be a plausible excuse, as long as you never took any one else out!
In my one experience of falling asleep at the wheel had me drift into the grass verge, hitting that woke me up, and I can confirm the adrenaline rush works alot better than pro plus and redbull, I managed to do my 13 hour shift with no other incident, and wide awake.

I think that film was called ‘Black Dog’? And it was CRAP!!

I’ve never done as you say from the bunk, but done it a few times when I just rest my head on the steering wheel for a few mins :open_mouth:
"■■■■!!! " BRAKE!!! Erm, ok.

The other one I was discussing with a mate, pull into a services next to another truck, you start to doze and the truck next to you starts to move :open_mouth:  You’re convinced it’s your truck that’s moving and press the brake harder and harder until you actually wake up properly and realise

I suppose it might depend on what the dose is?

I must have been mixing topics with the drink driving one

Corrected now - still stands as scary as ■■■■ though

I get the waking up thinking your about to run up the arse of another lorry. Normally when I’m really tired and want a good sleep. It’s annoying, the more tired you get the more broken sleep you have. :frowning:

In my youth I didn’t have this happen to me. I didn’t work a 50 hour shift then drive home, (at McDs not in a truck) and I did pass out officer, honest.

Since then there is not a chance in hell I will drive tired. As soon as I start to blur out in my vision I stop at the next safest place. Hop out and have a ■■■ and walk around the unit and trailer a few times to get the circulation going, have the kettle cooking and phone a mate. If this doesn’t help the blurring out the next time I stop is for 9 hours plus. I nearly killed myself at eighteen, I’m not going to risk killing someone else now.

My very good mate tony  at kelloggs :sunglasses: going to Wrexham on his third run  last roundabout  or ROUNDOVER :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: claimed the big owl flew straight through his passenger window and slapped him in the kisser on the way out of his driver side window! Lol he ditched it as well and kelloggs sacked him! :open_mouth:
