Took my test today, about 15 minutes from the end did a left turn from stand still and after completing the turn flicked switch up to change from 4th to 5th but the box wouldn’t select a gear or any gear. Tried everything I could think of to sort it out but eventually examiner said clutch down, toggle the switch and find a gear. Did it moved off and back at the test centre, finished with 11 faults in total but the gear problem was classed as serious for holding up other traffic. 2 faults before I left the test centre for taking a shunt and left mirror. Denied…and now to put the icing on the cake the vehicle I used isn’t available for a re-rest for over a week.
Guess I just wasn’t ready but next time hopefully I will walk away grinning from ear to ear.
dont worry mate, mostly everybody failed first time c+e test or c ,concentrate next one,ask to your trainer for a short gear practice before 2nd test just to make it sure.
Sorry to hear you failed , but at least you know what you did , have a good look through your sheet note your minors and work on those before you go for your retest and best of luck for next time ,

To try and help other newbies, this will often happen if the range change is rushed. Especially if the vehicle has a fair mileage on it. Always pre-select the range change and then, slowly, change the gear. This normally does the trick. If it refuses to play, don’t panic. Down on clutch, into neutral, flick switch slowly back to low and then back to high and into 5th.
The whole knack of using a range change is to take your time.
Had the same happen to me on my test ,couldnt select a gear because the range change was stuck . examiner told me to toggle the range change switch and all was well again .
Only got a minor for it tho
Mind you i had 13 minors by the end
