Extra cash for languages

I wonder, if the company is doing, say, Spain or Italy, do their drivers, who speak Italian or Spanish get more cash than these, who can speak English only?

Non cappishe John, qe ?

I’ve not heard about any pay advantages based on language ability(may be wrong on that though).Only thing is it may swing the balance in your favour when applying for a job other things(experience etc.)being equal.

Does , Bad language , count ?

Q. What do you call somebody who speaks three languages?

A. Tri-lingual.

Q. What do you call somebody who speaks two languages?

A. Bi-lingual.

Q. What do you call somebody who speaks one language?

A. English.

Most Europeans under 40 speak English anyway. Even the French but they won’t admit it. When abroad just talk to them in English, if they understand, they will answer you. If you ask if they speak English first, the chances are they will say no. Two reasons for that. One is they don’t speak English well enough, the other is they don’t want to talk to you.
If you make the effort to speak the local lingo, they will try to help you even if it’s only because it gives them a chance of a laugh.
Don’t ask them to write things down for you in their language though. I did that once and got some very funny looks when I passed the note on to a local. I still don’t know what it said, nobody would tell me. One thing for sure though is it didn’t say what it should have.

Don’t think any firm would stump up more cash because of a driver’s ability to parlez the old local lingo, but such a driver would have a distinct advantage over his work colleagues with regards being sent to foreign climes.

I know I have  :sunglasses:

But, also, such driver will have plenty of other duties with phoning foreign speditor, translating foreign drivers coming to depot etc.

I know, I had

You thinking about taking English lessons then orys?

Taking, no.

I was considering giving, but my grammar is too poor

As is well known, all French people speak English all the time anyway and only start speaking in French when they realise there is an English person around, same as the Welsh.

In the evening after a few rum & cokes,I punch myself in the mouth.
That could be due to the fact that,(1) I’m single & (2) I’m also English. :unamused:

Actually, there are racial connections between the Welsh and the Bretons in north-western France particularly, and there is some crossover between the Welsh and French languages- the word “pont” means “bridge” in both languages, the Welsh for “Church” is “Eglwys”, in French it is “Eglise”, this is not coincidence.

Last year I delivered ship’s spares to the quayside at Lorient then parked overnight while the 38th Interceltic Festival of Lorient was taking place, this is dedicated to Celtic culture with many Welsh and Irish visitors travelling every year to attend a week-long party.

I was with another driver from my firm, Mickey P, and so, at the agent’s suggestion, we wandered along to take a look… absolutely sublime, one of those very special occasions that all continental drivers accidentally encounter from time to time, and which offset those rainy Sundays in November sat in a Belgian motorway services.
