Expect Distribution 11.5% Wage Increase

Expect have just made a bold move by increasing basic driver pay rates by 11.5%.

The changes are a result of Directors reviewing driver pay as part of our ongoing process of ensuring that the business not only retains a quality driving force which reflects the growing requirements of our customer base, but also our wish to attract the highest possible calibre of driver to Expect where we have recruitment needs.
A company that admits there is a serious problem in the industry, I have no idea what it has been increased from, but iv’e seen £8.50 ph being offered around bradford for class 1.

I also have no idea what rate of pay Expect drivers are on but taking the £8.50hr figure as read an 11.5% increase would mean a basic of £9.48hr. Can’t see that attracting the ‘highest calibre of driver’ somehow. :unamused:

11.5% increase?? 11.5% of what? Haud me back!!

They have an open day today… I just tried ringing them to see if I could find out the rates but the number given isn’t manned. Anyone in the Halifax area interested in finding out more?

Expect are forever advertising so there’s clearly something wrong with the job. I’ve heard the main problem is it’s multi drop on artic with collections afterwards. Plus they expect nights out at the drop of an hat. So all in all just your usual general haulage rubbish.

Not a bad hourly rate but it depends what they pay for overtime that’s usually the stumbling block if it’s not time and half.

It’s salaried I don’t think they pay overtime except for weekend work.

Most of the positions say ‘based on an average 50 hour week’

So the hourly rate is irrelevant unless you work Saturday/Sunday.

It’s still less than I’ve been on as agency in Huddersfield for the same type of work (palletways) at £10:50 ph. And I’ve just left there too go back to supermarket fridge work @ £17ph mon-fri.
The last week before xmas I’m doing 6 days @ £195 for ten hours, then £19 ph o/t. Oh, and they’re putting me up in a hotel.
I’m not bragging, and obviously, when the contract finishes, the work will drop off again - my point is the money is there, they just wont spend it until they’re desperate. And remember, the agency takes its cut before paying me!

It looks like Gist for M&S?

M&S will expect an increase in sales in the 2 weeks prior to Christmas therefore that money is there based on the increased sales and the need of extra loads and bums on seats to move those loads. Its not rocket science.

It will be a long January for that £1200 to last though.

Not for me, because I’m back to teaching in January, but my point was about the pay rate.
I understand about increased sales meaning increased volume, but surely they are still selling the goods in each load for the same price, so the driver is getting a certain percentage of each load.
So, even when the volume drops to post Christmas levels, and they revert to using their full timers only, what was a viable cut for the driver of each load, should still be viable.
Unless they’re trading at a loss for xmas, which I would find surprising?

They aren’t selling all the goods at the same price though, nor are they selling the same goods.

Because the supermarket is bulk buying items it either wouldn’t sell the rest of year or sell in smaller volumes it will negotiate better prices on the bulk.

Consumer behaviour is different again making bulk purchases of items they wouldn’t buy in such quantities or at all during the rest of the year and there is increased footfall through the shop.

Again the supermarket may put deals on certain items to get people through the door, so profit on items is different to what they would make in the rest of the year.

Of course they are all out to maximise their profits during the festive period but it isn’t unheard of for sales to not be as good as expected through poor planning or pricing or whatever other reason.

Anyway i’m no economist but its not as simple as the same wagon going in with the same goods on at the same price, because they aren’t.

DHL in Godmanchester just got an 8+% payrise. .

Needs to be 30-something K for a 35 hour week before I’m interested in upping sticks again. :unamused:
I’m missing out on Overtime as I am, - but that’s a small price to pay otherwise for decent hours @ a decent hourly rate average.

… And to think I remember being disappointed being turned down by Fedex a year earlier, who were offering £30k for a 55 hour week Monday-Friday night trunks to Enfield rather than Marston Gate… :sunglasses:

Basic Class 1 salary is £24,219 then. Forget hourly rates, thats the important figure.

So it’s the same old story of relying on long hours for O/T and/or allowances etc. to pull a decent take home figure. The money is just made up differently than the firm down the road that pays a big meal allowance or whatever.

Nothing really to change my opinion that if you are in a general haulage job, it’s usually pointless moving to another.

And at least you know, with the firm down the road that you are getting an extra £x per hour for doing 55 hours instead of 54.

SometSometime pay increase can drop total gross money. All company guaranty just 8 hours per shift but drivers work 8+If company but more trailers, customer start tipped much more quickly ,will more drop and swap that driving shift will be for 1-4 hours short per day or up to 20 hours less per week.If company make best planning that drivers lose easy 100 pound per week or 5000 per years.
