Expat Truckers Wanted for New TV Show

Hi there, Just so you know this has been Ok’d by Rikki-UK! Also, I come in peace-just after a bit of info from some of you guys!

My name is Frank and I work for a UK/US based TV production company called Nutopia. We make programmes for US and UK broadcasters including National Geographic and Discovery and we’re currently working on ideas for the new BBC Worldwide channel- BBC Earth.

BBC Worldwide are looking for ideas about British expats working abroad in extreme locations and tough jobs far from home, which is why we want to hear from you guys!

If any of you could perhaps spare some of your time to give me some advice on life as an ex-pat trucker that would be fantastic. You can contact me directly at either frank.macdonald@nutopia.com or on here. We’re really interested to know if there are ex-pat communities living in the likes of Canada, making a living over there.

Look forward to hearing from you. Really appreciate any info or time you may have spare.

Many thanks!

Brilliant, so Rikki ok’d it, money may well have changed hands.

First question first, what’s in it for us?

Show us the money, you guys turned over 1 Billion last year, surely you are not after freebies here■■?

Are you now■■?

You are posting on the premier UK trucking board with 55,000 members and a vast pool of information, your show may well sell for tens of Millions to various Commercial operators worldwide with a captive audience of hundreds of millions. A good little nugget from someone here could sell millions and millions in advertising to be shown during the commercial break of your truckin’ show.

Show us the money.

Ah, I’m afraid I don’t work for the BBC directly-I’m just a researcher for an independent production company! If we had money to burn I’d be on a plane out of here asking the questions in person

So the BBC is not paying you? Your company is not paying you? You work for charity? You doing this as a hobby?

Surely someone is getting paid here and stands to make millions.

As I said, you want ideas you can flog? It is going to cost you.

Unfortunately, millions is certainly not on the agenda. Hollywood movie maybe! This is just the start of an idea we have had here at Nutopia, nothing has been commissioned yet-hence the initial attempt at research into potential communities of drivers working abroad. Thanks for getting involved.

ok bud I will ask …what are you wanting■■? and whats in it for me?.

what are you looking for… desert dan in Oz or ice road alex, or even the expat that’s away from his home in Canada for 30days at a time.what about the guy that runs depot-quarry -depot 5 days/3 trips a day a 4500km …yeah its boring lol
What you might class as extreme might just be another day for me,its -24c +windchill today and ive been on a concrete pour this morning in a mixer.
Im sure many more on here are very wary o TV people after shows like IRT make good drivers look like swampdonkeys with all the editing and a simple milkrun to the quarry look like an expedition to the moon.
so name a few programs that have been produced by your company that we can watch to check them out.
james

Hi Jimbo. Thanks for replying to the post. Our first mega doc was the 12-hour Emmy Award winning America The Story of US series for History US, described as ‘a groundbreaking initiative of epic proportions.’ Airing in April 2010, it was introduced by President Barack Obama and became the most watched show in History Channel history.

With astounding specialist real-world filming techniques and stylised dramatisation, this series bought prestige to the History Channel and several international versions are currently being planned. The House That Made Me, was described by the UK Times as the “best British format since Undercover Boss”. 9/11: State of Emergency, an adrenaline-fuelled drama doc, made headlines across the world as did Targeting Bin Laden (History) airing as Bin Laden: Shoot to Kill (Channel 4) in the UK.
So, we make a variety of seriously high-end productions. IRT is not the sort of programme we make here-Check out our most recent bit of TV-How We Got to Now which aired on CBS in the states. Check it out youtube.com/watch?v=eLMCtFon6E0

In terms of what I want, well just a chat really and some info about being a UK Expat trucker abroad. Appreciate your time.

All the best.

Hi TV.I Think you have to clarify to us what area you are interested in because as ex-pats we have all done a a great diversity of work.
For example i lived for 30 yrs in Holland driving all over Europé,Middle East,USSR and North Africa. Now i live in Lappland and drive a tipper truck 1.5 kms underground in an iron ore mine. Some of the Canadian guys drive throughout Canada and most of the USA.
Are you looking purely at the transport side of things or is it to be a look at the way of life, why we moved, what we have achieved in our new lives regarding contentment and ‘‘quality of life’’ and job satisfaction etc.Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for getting back to me. Sounds like you have a pretty cool job! We would be interested in all aspects of life out there. Do you work along side any other Brits out there or are you flying the flag solo?

Hi TV.In my case i’m about the only Brit driving up here, there are a couple doing other types of work,ie mechanics, forestry, tourism etc. There are a few Dutch and German guys.Up here it is considered quite primitive in comparison to other parts of Europé,like Northern Canada or the Aus outback so you really have to want to move here as it is a complete lifestyle change.Even the Swedes call Lappland ‘‘the far side of the moon’’.Remember it’s over 4000kms NORTH of London.
For me it’s a relxing end to a long driving career, here i work only in the summer and then 7 Days and 7 Days free, some odd Days in the Winter. The most important thing for me is the ‘‘quality of life’’.I Think many ex pats have moved for an improved quality of life as much as financial rewards.Contentment also has it’s own pricetag.

There are a lot of behind the scenes stories to tell. It’s not just about the job, living in another country has many different sides to it, not all of them are good either!

Well I moved from London to North Norfolk! Now that’s some story!

another load of drivel like truck and trailers …

pass :unamused:

Idea for a different show - Film in a supermarket RDC Waiting Room for a few weeks, you could make it into a “Big Brother” type show.

The entertainment is priceless - the stories are phenomenal and the attitudes shown to drivers would wake the public up to how the big boys really treat people.

(In using this idea, I want lots of money in royalties  )

what like ice road truckers where drivers are seen losing control of a vehicle which goes from a tandem to a tri back to a tandem.

think the trucker thing has been done to the point of ridicule (i.e worlds toughest trucker etc).

Deffo agree with you there. I’ve given up watching these cringe-making fantasies. Robert

As good as the continuity on Top Gear then, where they jump a hundred miles in a shot, then he next shot is back 200 miles in the other direction!

yes!

but why try to make it so obvious, polar bear is doing 40 on a straight road with ■■■■ all for miles but if he slamms the hand brake on and pulls the steering wheel he could die!

all it does is give joe public more ammo.

Ha ha, that’s right, they always end with…" and then you could die "
