Existing drivers - look at the hazard perception test

As you know I am thinking of doing (that should be WAS thinking of doing ) our DCPC training - and the rules are doing my head in already so to lighten my morn I have just looked at the new hazard perception disk… how the F does anyone pass it - I get the hazard I press the button i get a flag… I get 1/5 ■■? best I have done was 2/5…

Glad I aint go to do it this way - I was crap at packman too !

Get one of your ‘off spring’ to do it! They are great at things like that!

You have to be aware of the hazard before it develops and becomes one, if it is already a hazard then its too late…

I remember Pac-Man, never played packman though, is it a wharehouse operative simulator?

The test assumes you’re cheating if you click really fast over and over, however I was taught that as soon as you see the potential hazard to click once per second for 3 seconds so you at least pick up some points.

For example, there was one video where you are driving between two areas of grass with lads playing football on one side and a girl walking her dog on the other. Click when you see the girl and dog walking towards the road, click again when the dog starts to run, click again just as both dog and girl run into the road. Should get 4/5 points for the first click but if you were too early you should still pick up 3 for the last click.

Clicking only once when a hazard is already fully developed won’t get you many points, pre empting the hazards and clicking just before they begin to develop nets you full marks.

But then experienced drivers struggle with the test because they see potential hazards too quickly before they expect new drivers to click, that loses you points, it is a bullshine game, one clip in particular, tractor long in the distance top of a bend, I the real world I have filed that as a hazard, it’s in my view as far ahead as I can see and subconsciously I am already prepared for it, in the test they want me to click a couple of hundred meters behind it, thus I actually lose points by clicking early.

The only way I was able to get good at the test was by getting one of those training dvd’s and doing practice tests, then I was able to understand post test where they expected me to click, regardless of whether I logged it mentally already.

Really is a bs system.

As some of you may be aware, I’m an Approved Driving Instructor for my sins…
Yes, the Hazard Perception Test is very poor. It does teach awareness, but that is a necessary part of my lessons anyway. As has previously been said, experienced drivers struggle, but learners find it relatively easily. One pupil recently passed, when he came out he said it was like a video game!
We had to do the HPT as part of re-qualification, loads of ADI failed at the first attempt.
I have to keep up to date, so use the learning CDs on a regular basis. And I’ve never had a really good score on HPT. :frowning:
If you can, borrow a copy and have a go, it’ll make you think.
Also, give the Theory Test a bash if you can, WITHOUT cheating and looking at the Highway Code.
Have fun
