Just before the ecconomy went ■■■■ up I applied to join the Police.I passed the first couple of stages in the recruitment process before, due to budget cuts, they announced a freeze on all recruitment. I got a nice letter saying " Thanks for applying but we`re not recruiting anymore"!
I phoned them up and one of the officers in the recruitment dept asked if I would consider joining the Specials. Now,I don`t know about in England, but up here they have exactly the same powers as a regular officer and can drive Police vehicles etc, even the uniforms are identical now (Years ago,the used to have Special Constable written on them)
Eventually I thought I`d give it a try- a sort of “try before you buy” as if I joined the regular Police,it would be a drop in wages for the first 3 years.
Now we get to the question-I know being a Special Constable means you are exempt from the WTD,but what about EU regs?
Even the FTA girl in our office isn`t sure but she thinks I still must take my 45 hrs off but some of the drivers disagree.
Any help would be appreciated…
In any week you drive under EU rules you must have a weekly rest period. The crux of the matter as I see it is you must be free to dispose of your time as you wish during this period and as soon as you start your shift as a Special you are no longer free to dispose of your time as you wish, you would be under control of the police force and pretty much have to do as they tell you.I don’t think time spent working as a Special will be able to count as rest so you would still need enough time in the week to fit in your driving shifts, your police shifts and a weekly rest period. You are correct that the WTD won’t be an issue as working as a Special Constable does not count as work for the WTD for mobile workers.
Thanks Neil-that was quick!
Neil, you beat ROG to the answer!! Mainly because it took me longer to answer his text msg because I was standing in the rain this morning whilst the horse was being fitted with new shoes. By the way, we agree on the answer

I wasn’t 100% sure on that one so I am glad my reasoning was correct. Thanks for confirming it. Oh and BTW, I answered it last night long after ROG’s bedtime.

Thats a bit cryptic,
Not that cryptic.
ROG has a history of PM’ing, texting or phoning people to try to get the answers to questions asked on here, and other forums, so he can then pass them off as his own answers. He used to try it with me a while back until I sussed him out and stopped giving him the answers. I saw answers I had given him by PM pop up, shortly after I sent the PM, on other forums so I stopped answering him.
