Excited Much! HGV Driver soon to be :)

Hi there everyone,

Everything is finally coming together… well slowly
Im a young male (18) living in liverpool, im currently working as a chef in a fine dining restaurant in the city centre,
ive been working for 6 years… i know right 6 years haha. As a child i have grew up around lorries, my dad has been
a lorry driver for 11 years driving the class 1 wagons for various companies, and i have had some great memories and adventures.

I have been driving my car now for 1 year and 5 months and have gained experience on the road, i love to drive even at night when i finnish work around midnight i tend to take the long route home hehe, so i may aswell get paid to do my hobby

Anyway… Ive always wanted to be on the road in my lorry, listening to music, travelling etc so ive decided to take a loan and start learning!!!

Ive got my medical booked on 21st may @ 1.15pm for a reasonable £51 which ive learnt is actually a great price, my GP wanted £120 for 30 minutes of ticking boxes :astonished: . Today a package came for me in the post, it was my official DSA theory book and my CPC book  cant wait to get my head into them when i have time from work, which isnt often,
unfortunatley my hours in work are unsociable and long so im used to this type of industry work, 15 hour shifts 5 days a week

Once ive had my medical on monday i shall send off everything to the DVLA to gain my provisional status for HGV  , will also read my books whilst i wait, book my theory and as soon as this is done i will look forward to getting into the lorry, ive chosen the same instructor who taught my dad 12 years ago so hopefully the skills will rub off on me and i will pass first time as i anxiously want to get on the road.

Welcome along mate, I was a chef when I was 18 and went from that to being an HGV driver, stood me in good stead for heating up a tin of beans on nights out.

Keep us informed, good luck.

Cheers mate  will do.

Finally another 18 year old here  Best of luck along the journey mate, it’s quite daunting for the first time when you actually get behind the wheel but your year and a half of car driving won’t prepare you for it lol.

PS, I’d probably loose the Stobart avatar before you get some slagging

Don’t forget to tick the other categories on your provisional form so that you will not need another medical if you decide to go PCV.

Quite right. For clarification, you need to tick the boxes for Provisional C and Provisional D. No others.

Best of luck with it all and dont be afraid to fire questions at us. Pete

Thanks for the support people  it really helps i understand that it will be hard and im worried about finding work when/if i pass  didnt think about the PCV actually, good to know as if i do decide to do PCV work it’ll save me another extortion rate of a medical (Y) cheers again hopefully i’ll write back with a comment of passing …

Welcome mate. Why don’t you try stobartgroup.co.uk/careers/t … ticeships/
I know they get some slagging but why not apply and see if you can get paid to get your licenses rather than forking out your hard eared cash.

Hi there,
I actually wouldnt mind working for Eddie Stobart  (waiting to be slagged now haha)  but i have already checked this out and i was going to apply untill i read into it, its like a 26 week programme only getting paid £96 a week whilst training, unfortunatley i have bills to be paid, car finance, car insurance, house rent, etc the list goes on haha  so my nan has kindly offered a loan to do my courses for now im going to do the Cat C liscence.

But remember after the 26 weeks with stobart that you will have a job set up?

Wouldn’t it be better getting a smaller loan to pay the bills and take the training and have a job.

Because being 18 and no experience you are going to find it extremely difficult to find any work.

doesnt sound too bad, but i have already paid for the medical on monday and bought my dsa books etc.

Hi there mate welcome to the forum nice to see some more young blood! Just a heads up its very hard to get a start in the industry espically at your age. I just done my class c 3 months ago, im 26, full clean license and still cant find a job without 2 years experince! But that said some places are willing to take you on and mould you like stobies, I would say its worth a shot mate!

Good luck!

I’ll write to stobart, the widnes plant is not far from where i live  but the apprentice i think is just a long shot for the commitments and bills i have, maybe i could still apply but when ive passed everything.

Hey there,
I have most deffinatley thought about working for UNIVAR as its a great company they look after drivers (my dad) a lot. But they are a chemical firm and need ADR liscence etc plus my dad doesnt want to babysit me haha, and he says they need drivers with experience :frowning: good try anyway x

I know a couple of the guys personally who were the Eddie Stobart Trucks & Trailer’s program as apprentices and 2 of 3 I know have jacked it in. I wouldn’t do an apprenticeship there but if I passed and was then offered a job then I’d take it just to get a bit of experience, but their pay is very poor and it’s even lower than the normal drivers rate for the first year or two if i read correctly.

It took me 5 months to get my first start and I’m the same age as you and even then I’d say I probably struck lucky. (very in fact)

If your thinking about tanker driving when you pass Suttons of St hellens take new drivers. If you do the c+e ADR tanks & packages you’ll have a good chance. They supply full training in St hellens too. Worked for them for about 5 years and found it easy clean work. Unlike car transporters which is where I’m at now
