European trailers

I’ve just had the agency come on with a week of nights picking up European ferry trailers from Immingham.

Is there anything I need to know about this?
What can I expect

cheers

Its a pretty straight forward job, at night you’ll be in and out of the dock before you know it, i’d give the trailer a look over before you head off with it as some are abit crap. Have you used palm couplings? You may have to put in the light lenses and bulbs yourself so make sure you ask the company your working for whether you need them and make sure you get some. At immingham you need to write down the bay number and code that you pick up and drop a trailer.

by code he means the rest of the stuff written on the floor - usually a number and a letter if memory serves. no great problems to expect, when your booking in just take your time and read what it says on the display - there is a phone if you get stuck(this is dsv riverside i’m talking about) make sure you wear your hiviz though, i once had a right laugh hiding from a tug driver who was acting al hi and mighty because i wasnt wearing my hi viz - he kept moving his tug so he could see down each side of the truck so i kept darting to the other side, childish but amusing at the time, he wasnt laughing. you dont need to stop at the main security gate, but once you are in the relevant terminal put your hazards on (which i think is stupid because you cant signal where you are going or be signalled to) you may also need your own winding handle as quite often they are missing. most everything is signposted whe you go in.

Might be worth popping a couple of wheels in your bag - by the sound of it you never know

Take some bungees with you and take the wing tops off the unit as well and tie them behind the cab. But to be honest if its a dog of a unit anyway I suppose no one cares if they are already battered.

and make sure there’s a pin or bolt to go through it

I’ve still got my bolt from Montgomerys :grimacing: :grimacing:

Check 5th wheel position, you don’t want put the trailer in the cab. Foreign trailers don’t get looked after like ours, they’ll only see base when something brakes,id have a good sniff round em.

Somebody on here did a rough picture guide about ‘how to’s’ regarding dock work.

Sure it was Immingham but might be wrong.

I did one (with pictures)about how to get in/out of Felixstowe with ferry trailers, but its all changed now.
