europe work

is european work better paid then uk only .how do you get a start in europe work
thanks. tigger

Depends on who you work for, of course, but no it doesn’t usually pay more than UK work.

Getting a start in Euro work is much the same as getting a start in any other part of the job. Find out names and start calling. There aint many companies that I know of in the Blackpool area, but there’s bound to be one or two.

Welcome to TruckNet UK.
Sorry I haven’t been much help, some one else may be.

At our firm, we are paid more on UK work than on Continental work.

That having been said, money ain’t everything and there is fierce competition, ■■■■■■■■, bickering and backstabbing among us drivers to grab any continental work which comes along- quite simply, it is a totally different job, better in every way. The roads are better, the truckstops are fantastic, food is good and cheap, you can get a shower anywhere…

The trouble is that there is a shortage of work “over the watta” at the moment, and so it’s harder to get it than it has ever been.

You need a mix of persistance and luck. Find firms locally (sorry, Blackpool ain’t my neck of the woods) and keep on at them, looking for a start. If you want it enough, you’ll get it.

However, you might want to change your user name to “I would love to drive anything at all and work 20 hours a day”

HOW MUCH DO U GET PAYED OVER THERE TO DRIVE BY THE MILE

HOW MUCH DO U GET PAYED OVER THERE TO DRIVE BY THE MILE

we dont get paid by the mile mate :open_mouth:

Actually, some of us do…although admittedly we are in the minority by quite a long way.

It’s illegal for any firm to pay totally on mileage (according to the computer in the office, rather than the distance you actually go - same the world over that one… sometimes you win, sometimes you lose…you know how it goes…) so there are various other minor components to our pay scheme (including, most importantly, a guaranteed £49-ish a day, based on 8hrs)…but I earn a very similar amount this way as the guys doing a similar job on hours, so I’ll give you a brief run-down for comparison’s sake:-

Bear in mind, BTW, that we are limited to about 56mph, just like most other trucks over here…
We get:

  • 26ppm for the first 1750 miles.
  • 28ppm after that. (Generally get in about 1850-2000 on a good 5 day week, although obviously it varies).
  • £10 per hour after 3 hours waiting (after 2hrs for a 20ft box - we pull mostly containers).
  • “Half a day’s pay” - so about £24.60 - for any job within about an hour’s drive, instead of mileage pay. Good earner if you do a quick run into town between distance jobs…or if you reload 20 minutes from where you delivered.
  • £10 per delivery if you do more than 2 “locals” (so after you’ve got your “whole day’s pay”, if you do another local you get £10 for all 3…giving you your £49-ish plus 3 x £10. Yes, our brains start hurting at this stage too!!! :open_mouth:
  • A guaranteed bonus of 5% of your gross wage. Don’t ask, Suffice to say that after a disasterous round of pay-talks one year (from the Company’s point of view), they never again refused to raise the mileage rate in line with experience…
  • £18 tax free allowance for every night away from home…(even if it’s only 20 minutes from home… )
  • All parking costs and tolls etc. paid. (Including the M6 Toll. Ner-ner. )
  • Up to 6 weeks sick pay a year, paid at £40 per day.
  • 20 days paid holiday, plus 8 Public Holidays…all paid at about £67.50 a day.

There are various bonuses for running Saturdays or Sundays too…but since I never do, I wouldn’t like to vouch for what they are.

Generally, I take home between £400 and £450 for 5 days and 4 nights away, depending on how the work goes (and whether I’m in the office’s good books that week). Because we aren’t paid by the hour, that can work out at a very good or fairly mediocre rate depending on how energetic you’re feeling that week!!!

The downside is that, because the whole shebang is only just legal by the skin of it’s teeth, the local Ministry (enforcement types) watch us like hawks!!!. Running “bent” is not a viable option.

Hope that helps! :grimacing:

A pal of mine mentioned parkinson a couple of years ago , when I was looking for a job. I rang him a few times but the transport office could not answer the difficult question of wether they were recruiting and I got nowhere.
Call me a cynic but I prefer to work for people who at least know their own business.

Pay on europe work. I haven’t a clue because i don’t do it. But there is a job on the jobcentre website S & K i believe it is in Cardiff; paying £600 a week if i remember rightly.

Pleae notice the little key on the centre left of your keyboard marked “Caps Lock”. Press it before your next post and turn your capitals off.

And, on behalf of all Americans, may I apologise for my fellow countryman’s lack of internet etiquette.

Had a bad day Alex■■?
We don’t mind too much, he’s an American after all (please note, I didn’t call him a Yank  :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: ). We’ll allow him a bit of leeway, as long as he doesn’t carry on in that loud American way for too long :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:  .

Have you been peeking Alex?

Thats exactly where mine is too :stuck_out_tongue:

lucy, thankyou for your reply. i didn’t ask the recent question about pay rates but i have been glued to this sight for some time now trying to find out what the typical pay and benies are like over there. fyi, drivers over here don’t get sick pay. if i take a day off 'cause i’m sick, then i won’t get paid for that day. also, it’s possible to legally work over 80 hours a week based on our version of the WTD.

here in germany some firms do pay a mileage related wage butthis is hidden within agreements so that it does not show up ,also some austrian firms pay mileage wages but you do have to go non stop
and its not worth the effort i belive as the controls are stricter now than
for ten years ago and also the fines and possible points make it not worthwile.

over here we have all kinds of pay schemes. theres mileage( which sometimes includes extras for groupage dels and p/u’s), hourly, tonnage, per trip pay, percentage, salary, and goofy combos of those. the only fair method i’ve ever worked under is when i was hourly getting paid for my time at work.
