EU tables new measures for freight transport

Ey up! the knives are out again for freight transport as we know it with the ‘Greening transport package’ The EU commission unveiled a package of laws yesterday (11th July) aimed at slashing the carbon footprint of the freight industry. The EU commission tabled new measures for greener freight transport & a shift to rail. "“The Greening Transport Package has potential to create a more sustainable, efficient and harmonised transport system for freight. It is a big step towards the ambition of shifting more traffic to rail,” :open_mouth:
“Under the Commission proposal, a standard 40 metric ton truck would see an additional 4 metric tons added to its maximum weight restriction while hydrogen-powered trucks would be longer.”

“The legislation also seeks to smooth over cross-border restrictions and mandate the use of built-in road detectors to check for weight infractions in an effort to reduce pollution, infrastructure strain and overall congestion that costs the EU €230 billion a year.”
