EU agrees to increase dimensions of HGV's

The EU have agreed to extend existing regulations on HGV length to make them 80cm - 90cm longer.

This should mean that safer and more fuel efficient lorries are made, it was going to be started in 2017 but lobbyists including France and Sweden want it delayed… Now it will be coming in 2022.

Will be interesting to see the new design concepts and how they will improve fuel efficiency.

UK hasn’t got the infrastructure to take the rigs we’ve got at the moment, thank ■■■■ I’ll have handed in the last set of keys long before this comes in :unamused:

Does this include the new extra-long trailers that are being tried out at the moment? Perhaps it would allow a bit of extra cab length for long-haul drivers, as American drivers have.

It won’t though will it? It will mean running trailers a bit longer to cram a couple more pallets on :unamused:

It is for aerodynamic aids, probably cabs will get a short sloped bonnet to get rid of the flat front and reduce the height a little to give a smaller frontal area and therefore less wind resistance So you never know there could be the opportunity for a LITTLE more cab space, but I wouldn’t count on it just yet.

So T-cabs all round then?

Bit late to increase size of HGVs but they could for LGVs

Most of the depots we go into were designed for 40 footers, so already a bit tight,
then you try and get on a bay between a couple of W & Drags, with barely 3 foot between bays and the muppets have stacked 2 rows of pallets & cages against the fence opposite the bays - so it gets to be a challenge & sorts out the men from the boys.

As they want to lower the driver dose that mean flat floor cabs have to go as well

the extra 80-90cm wont go on comfort, more likely profit

The flat bed would be going if some of my old guv’nors were still working, as you would be awake earlier !

More to do with safety and fuel efficiency.
The legislation will allow extra length to be used in the manufacture of lorry cabs as long as they conform to aerodynamic and safer specifications, with a view to this becoming mandatory for all new cabs.

Examples of safety improvements include bigger windscreens for the front and sides of lorries; deflecting ‘round nose’ to throw cyclists to the side - as happens with cars — rather than sucking them under the wheels, as happens currently; and 'crumple zones’ or shock absorbers

The extra permitted length would appear to be on the tractor unit. Difficult to see how that would allow more goods/pallets to be crammed into the trailer.

Those ones are the most fun. I love a challenge of a tricky reverse. Although I may have moved a set of pallets with the rear end of a trailer on Wednesday night
