As far as I am aware it’s already s compulsory two week ban for lgv drivers.
My employer has had three caught recently and all had their licences suspended for two weeks.
As we are also all IAM registered drivers we now lose that too even for using handsfree.
Mind you I must admit handsfree is almost as bad as handheld. How many do you pass on yhe road who are all over the place both course and speed and when you look at them they’re gassing away into their earpiece?
To make any impact on stopping drivers of any type of vehicle using mobile phones an automatic 6 month driving ban should be bought in as that’s the only thing that’s going to stop regular users. Eddie.

crap, utter crap if they are going to take a licence away from a truck driver they have to do it to motrbikes, cars and bus drivers!
Just as a matter of interest has anybody on here seen a motorcyclist holding a mobile phone to his ear whist riding a bike.

Apart from this fella no
while i do not agree with using mobiles while driving it would be interesting to see how many police officers have lost their jobs through some kind of negligence, the answer would probably be none because they look after each other,i also find it amazing that people like kavanagh and other authority bodies class us as proffesionals when we are wrong but just drivers when we do nothing wrong and treat drivers in general like dirt,i wonder what would happen if kavanagh done something wrong, would he lose his job,and if he did he would probably get a nice fat pay off or the usual excuse i e retired on medical grounds which is the norm for police officers, people like him make me sick,on that note how many police officers have kept their jobs when they have caused a death by dangerous driving,a majority of them get away with it,there was a case a few years ago where an experienced police instructor was showing 3 others how to perform persuit training he came round a bend at speed straight into a traffic jam and hit a car crushing it to nothing and killing the young nurse on her way to work if i remember correctly he got away with it,the police are such hypocrites

That has just saved me typing that out, we are merely licence holders like everyone else on the road.

A quick Google search reveals that between 1st Jan 2010 and 15 Oct 2011 (i.e. 22 months) a total of 66 Metropolitan Police officers were sacked for misconduct (no idea how many resigned rather than waiting for the inevitable), 13 of them (i.e. 20%) for “Other neglect or failure of duty”. Another 4 of them (i.e. 6%) were for “Traffic Irregularities”. I daresay the figures for the rest of the country are comparable.
Perhaps it’s worth remembering that a police constable can be dismissed at any time during his first two years’ service if the chief constable thinks he is not up to the job, or not likely to become “an efficient and well conducted constable” (A PC dismissed under this process would not be included in the figures above, which are for “misconduct”.
I wonder how many LGV drivers are on a 2-year probabtionary period to see if they are up to the job?
Its funny how any new legislation gets off the ground quite quickly, so how about the government telling all haulage operators, they have to fit hands free kit into all of their vehicles. Also holding them to account, because they constantly phone drivers when the schedules go ■■■■ up, and they need to warn drivers of any change in their work schedule. They constantly do it, knowing drivers have been dismissed ( after a disciplinary ) for using a phone whilst driving. Some of these companies, dont know how to spec a vehicle, they order 70 trailers, 40 units, spec the running gear, and what suits them, so why not add a little extra, like a hands free kit…simples.
1st offence=
£500 fine.
6 points.
Sieze the vehcile.
Trev_H:
Our company has a policy that says mobile phones shouldn’t be switched on whist driving but have inbuilt hands free fitted
Suits me fine, the job runs so much smoother without them ringing up, sort of defeats the point of having a mobile phone though !
I’d tell them to get ■■■■■■! how is someone supposed to contact you regarding an emergency or something important such as god forbid involving a loved one/family?? That policy is total ■■■■■■

what a legend!!!
to roymondo,no disrespect intended, but i can only assume from your reply that you were an ex police officer or you know someone who is/was,i was a little bit annoyed when i wrote my reply because i am a little tired of authority having a pop at hgv drivers in general
MrReliable:

That has just saved me typing that out, we are merely licence holders like everyone else on the road.once THEY took our HGV licence and points off us in the early 90s and amalgamated into the EU communities licence that was the way to shaft us big style!
then we had twelve points like the MOTORIST!
sort of defeats the object of SACKING PROFESSIONAL HGV DRIVERS doesn’t it?
who’s going to drive the trucks?
