shouldn’t they get prosecuted anyway, totally illegal, fair play to Essex police, car drivers always think they can get away with it
It always makes me smile the phrase "car drivers always think they can get away with it ", I presume all truck drivers these days always walk to work or cycle.
Bottom line, unless instructed by authorities you sit tight. You can’t make the rules up as you go.
Same as the ones that are so special in a jam they use hard shoulder.

Thses drivers have been tried and convicted in their absence by members of the public. People who aren’t trained in the rules of the road to the same level as a traffic copper is. The law is based on facts not opinion, when that changes were in very dangerous territory. Especially if the people who make the rules benefit from catching the rule breakers.
I’m a member of a bad driving group on Facebook. I normally sit there staring at the screen condemning all these idiouts pulling their stupid manouvers safe in the knowledge that I’m a better driver than they are. The other week I saw a video of myself driving my lorry and going through a red light. I’m pretty sure that never happened so had a think. As it happened I remembered the I incident. I was fully loaded and in slow moving traffic, the lights were on green but there was only just enough room on the other side of the junction for me to fit, so I went through it slowly. The lights have obviously changed as I’m part way across and dash cam knob has only shown the part were his light is green but a big lorry is trundling across the junction. Needless to say I got the video taken down, but what would have happened if he’d sent that to the police?

You are right. We need laws and standards to operate a civilised society. However, there are degrees of criminality and there is a need for proper detection of crime.
A violent robbery against a pensioner isn’t the same as trying to get off a motorway illegally. Getting off a motorway illegally when the traffic is at a standstill isn’t the same as doing it in 70MPH flowing traffic. I agree, there should be penalties for those that committed the offences, but the bit that doesn’t sit right with me is the “policing from a computer” approach.
In the past, people wouldn’t have considered taking the course of action that they did, because they expected to be caught on the spot by a cop in a white hat, who knew every bit of The Road Traffic Act. Now, we have cameras that are (rightly) seen as earners. On top of that, we have dash-cam dullards who want to be teacher’s pet by sending (often vexatiously) hours of boring footage to The Police. The more people that do this, the more the cops will come to rely on it and the less real cops there will be. That’s not a good thing.
We already have armies of plastic “enforcement officers” from Community Wardens to HATO wombles, when what most people want is more Police Officers. Real coppers doing real jobs, not jobsworth halfwits in hi-vis jackets.
The problem is, the easier people make it for the government to save money, the more they will do it.
Consider charities, there are thousands of them in this country, it’s a huge business. That’s the problem, the simple and noble act of charity has been made illegitimate by corporate and governmental greed.
There should be no need for charities in this country.
I’m sure most of us have a favourite charity or two that we like to support, but it’s something that has been bothering me for years - who is really benefiting? I’m still struggling with it.
Do you see my point though? We need to stop doing the jobs of others, it’s bad for all of us.
Sorry for rambling.

Aye - I can’t remember any copper ever knocking on my door and saying, ‘you look a bit tired mate, why don’t you hop up onto the bunk and I’ll do your next stint for ya’. Nobody ever offers to do my job for me.
So you wouldn’t “help out a copper” by reporting a theft?
How would you feel If others walked past when your car was being hot-wired.
If you’re first on the scene of accident, you wouldn’t help the injured as that’s a Doctor’s job, not yours? Really?

I can see some of your point about charities.
On the traffic side, do you feel the same way about speed cameras? Or should speeding tickets only be issued after a chase with a jam-sandwich using blues’n’twos pulls you over?
I can see there is a different emotion involved, but I won’t condemn the use of speed cameras etc at all.

When it comes to actual crime, from your neighbour’s house getting burgled to witnessing a murder, I more than likely would report it to the Police, not to ‘help them’ as such but more to start the victim on the road to justice.
When it comes to traffic, someone getting ran over, or similar…yeh same thing.
As for traffic offences that are uneventful like this particular one, and that don’t concern me ?..not a chance, none of my business.
Not keen on doing the Police’s job for them in that respect, all they are interested in is offences that raise revenue, the words ‘‘■■■■’’ and ‘‘fire’’ spring to mind…I aint a fan tbh.

Yes I would do my civic duty and help others out - but there is quite a difference between putting someone in the recovery position to purposefully carrying a full medical kit about in hope someone gets injured so you can play at being a doctor.
I use a dashcam for my own protection, I have no interest in pursuing other motorists who may make a mistake - Imagine the scenario, someone overtakes you and they cross a double line, so you run off to the cop shop with the video, cops says thanks - then you get a letter through the post; it is going to court, you will have to take a day off work, 300 mile round trip to the court, probably sit in some stinky waiting room all day then stand up in court and point the finger at some bloke who on any other occasion you could of had a few beers with. How much fun would that be.

I share your sentiments exactly Rob and although what they did was stupid etc etc I would never grass anyone up when basically no harm was done.
So is it seen by many of us as a “victimless crime”?
What if those running the wrong way were involved in an accident?
(I don’t say that were on this occasion)
What if they blocked the hard shoulder and prevented emergency ambulances getting through?
When they took the decision to turn they can’t have known all the circumstances surely? They took a chance of their time against an unknown safety factor.
Is running a red light OK, so long as there is no actual collision??
Is doing 40mph outside the school gates OK, so long as no kids die?
I maintain these were selfish individuals, who failed to have a responsible attitude.

This website needs some serious updating. I’ve just written a rather long answer and then found I had been logged out. Again.
Can’t be bothered to re-write it, but how about some investment in the site?

More investment in old time coppers? I’ll agree there. High visibility deterrents, who use experience to decide whether to issue a ticket, or give you a verbal rollicking.
What if. What if?
We do it all the time.
Do you go past the school at 40mph or think “what if a kid runs out” and go slow?
Do you drive into the fog on the limiter, or think “what if there’s a queue”?
The level of risk may not be the same in this case, but the principle stands. And if it becomes “acceptable” to break the law to save a bit of time here, in this case, what’ll these drivers do next?
I reckon a fixed penalty is justified.

Exactly right Franglais.
Ten or so mile tailback on M5 Taunton area n/b yesterday, counted about 10 cars at different intervals running down hard shoulder.
You would think there would be at least one Police car, marked or unmarked, in such a long queue to sort them.
The dashcam hero crime fighters could have had a field day.
