Erskine Bridge M898 - A82

Heard on the news that the Scottish Executive are planning to do away with the Tolls on the Erskine Bridge (major River crossing, linking M8 to A82 over River Clyde) as early as March …not before time !!

Someone took them to court a long long time ago to prove the toll was illegal and won the case i seem to remember, i,m talking 80,s here when i used to live not far from it.

Hi jammymutt, yes I seem to remember something along those lines, if I’m not mistaken there was some loophole allowed them to continue charging because it hadn’t yet been paid for and also that the Tolls were in line with other UK Toll Crossings (same applied to Forth ) and UK legislation on Bridges as opposed to Highways allowed them to carry on charging because if they’d done away with the Tolls it would have set a UK precedent, whereas now the bridge is controlled by Scottish Legislation and not UK so it can be done

Other problems have been…

Erskine Bridge…couple of years ago tolls were collected illegally for a week or so as the original legislation for it had expired and not renewed in time. Once it was discovered tolls were suspended until new legislation was passed.

Need to remember that one when the road tax is due.

Forth Road Bridge…1 person lodged an objection to the toll charges being raised, this meant a public inquiry had to be held and delayed the toll being increased for a year. Shame more people didn’t object more often.

Skye Bridge…loads of protests, once all the profit had been made, tolls scrubbed.

its a pity that the humber bridge will never ever pay for itself … so exorbitant prices for lorries and cars …

Heres the latest on the Scottish Toll Bridge saga, Erskine Bridge Toll Free from 31st March but…
