Whats happening at thorpys these days ■■
Closed down.
I was aware that they shut down, but about a month ago I saw one of their trucks on the road
I saw a rigid flat bed too, just the other day
Perhaps they have been sold (the vehicles that have been spotted) or perhaps they are being driven to auction?
Our much missed contributor Saviem had this to say about Ernest Thorpe’s back in 2013
"Evening all, from my experience, Thorpe`s are one of the old school, just get on and do a difficult job correctly.
They had a 60tonne payload King off me, and ran it in one of the works at Shefield, behind an ex ministry 6x4 SedAtk, daycab, locked in low range, carrying coils, but beautifully maintained.
It is a falasy of contemporary times that the only way to run is with “new” equipment, the best lorries are the ones that owe you nowt, and can be parked against the wall, if the job, or rate is no good!(which in hire and reward…is most of the time!!
Should be more Thorpe`s about, but most of the “proper” businesses are getting Malcolm, (Harrison), to sell them up, becoming a sad old job today…
Cheerio for now."
Many of us will always remember Thorpes distinctive Atkinsons
Is Harrison Tpt.from the same area still operating or have they failed also ? I doubt if many modern drivers would be able to move far,if at all,in his old Scammell.
