ERFs with 4MW cabs RHD & LHD

Why a Rolls Royce 220 when they were soon to be putting Cummins 335s in domestic UK 4MWs? I can only assume cost. ERF won this huge contract on cost. Getting 50 artics to Jordan during the Israeli-Palestinian war of 1969 was fraught with hazard, as the port of Aqaba on the Red Sea was blocked. Driving them overland won the day. Also, procurement of 50 Cummins engines might have been difficult, even though they were made here at Shotts.

It’s a pity that the 4MW was nowhere near as good looking as the 5MW cab you could have instead! But beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and it is St Valentines day after all :rofl: : it’s a shame that this old codger can only lust after a Motor Panels design of 56 years ago!
