My ERF EC11’s rear axle is leaking oil badly through the wheel. I have been calling parts suppliers to source the right part to replace. The problem is I don’t know the part number. I also don’t know what axle the vehicle has (I know its not Rockwell). Can you help me source this part that is causing this. What else should I be looking out for soon to prevent further damage.
Hi ,that half shaft looks like a Rockwell 180e if it’s drum brakes .if you call Beeches in stoke on Trent speak to parts ask for Paul ,Nigel or Simon give them your chassis number they should sort it ,have you checked the breather on the axle top for blockage of oil/ dust .01782 848485
I agree about the Rockwell 1/2 shaft and would be surprised for it to be otherwise. If this hub seal is leaking badly as you say, not only is there a very good chance that it will be soaking the brake shoes in oil, but if you get pulled in - and if the brake shoes are covered in oil, then you will be getting an immediate prohibition.
Without wishing to sound unkind, if you have been unable to guess what is wrong then you are unlikely to be able to do this job successfully yourself. Since the picture is not that clear there is the possibility that it is merely the half shaft joint which is leaking due to the bolts not being tight. However you would I hope have noticed that to be so during a walk around check.
You need to get this looked at urgently because neither you nor I know whether the true reason for this oil leak may not be that the large nut behind the 1/2 shaft securing the hub, wheels etc has come loose. Unlikely, but possible.

That happened to me with an Eaton axle on my Foden and I only discovered it when my torch beam shone on a patch of oil when locking the garage up at night, the nut had come off and was rattling around on the half shaft! I could see the brake shoes it had moved out that far, goodness knows what would have occoured the next day if I hadn’t noticed the oil patch.
Pete.
It doesn’t look pretty at all so I parked the truck. Had someone look at it and they day its the hud seal that’s busted. Got a quote from one reputable supplier and they asked for £750 for the seal! I fell of my seat. Surely that’s ridiculous. There must be another way.
There’s a mistake somewhere. More like £75 for the seal and £750 parts and labour, to renew the oil seal and reline the brakes on both sides of the rear axle.
The £750 is about right for a 177e axle if it’s a year2000 Ec ,that’s MAN dealer price it would have to come from Swindon ,it’s a cassette seal/ bearing ,try Hgv direct or Abs burton on Trent for after market product prices .the man price is over inflated as a Daf one is about £300 from Daf ,the same cassette could be cheaper through a foden / Daf parts seller like James hart at chorley but you would need the chassis number from a foden with the same axle but beware the alpha is likely to have the 180 axle and I wouldn’t know if they are the same hub .
This is a Rockwell axle and usual problem is a blocked or sticking none return axle breather
I don’t think the OP is in the UK.
