yes your right, rest cab E-SERIES, fine looking lorry
No thread such as this would be complete without…
The two ‘11’s’ on the left were destined for warmer climes but I believe the Olympic on the right is still running.
Hi, does anyone know if the EC14 used the N14 Celect engine from the start or did the early EC’s use the non electronic Big Cam? When was the Big Cam phased out?
Cheers,
Phil.
The first ones from 93 on were rated 340,380,410,500,which were the step timing ones ,the celects came out in 97 at 425,525 I can’t think of the other horse powers, the ratings changed with the lorry manufactures as foden rated these slightly differently .
Am I right in thinking the step timing models are purely mechanical, with no electronics? To be honest I thought the early EC’s were Celect with the later models having the more sophisticated Celect Plus? I am looking to buy an EC14 (or maybe a 12) as a restoration project, was only interested in the Perkins engine’d trucks but have looked at couple of smokers hence the interest in the ■■■■■■■ engine’d EC14. A local owner/driver had one with over a million miles on it, no smoke and has never had any engine work at all. He had owned it from new.

I always regarded the change over as the point at which the Twin-splitter stopped behaving like a full-on constant-mesh 'box (as in the E-series) and started to respond to the demands of the ‘Select’ system. When driving EC11s I noticed that the Select system would often alter the revs that I produced when ‘blipping’ to double-declutch, thus sabotaging what might have been a perfect gear-change on a low-tech machine. I found the Twin-splitter to be vastly better to use in the E-series, but I suspect that I would have equally found it nice to use in the comparitively low-tech 14-litre ■■■■■■■ ECs that preceded ‘Select’. The picture shows an EC11 I drove (still loved them!). Robert
Robert do you mean like turning in a yard low speed, low revs ,you ease off ,split, blip, but no gear change happens because the celect keeps the the revs on thus not allowing the break needed in transmission ?

Yes, that’s a good example: it interferes with the natural break in torque when you need it most. Robert
Just a reminder that I did start a separate thread for Left-Hand-Drive ERF ECs a while back, and that’s still going. Meanwhile, here’s a RHD interior pic. Robert
Here’s an LNG one I drove on Gist one day. It had a Perkins TX 12litre engine and Twin-splitter, and went surprisingly well round London! Robert
