So If I get on the M6 at J3 the signs will say M6 West/East.Your splitting hairs now. The direction of the road at that point is east/ west. We all know that the M6 runs from north to south or vice versa generally, but as the Romans did not build it it tends to deviate.
So why not just use north/south, then everybody knows what’s what.

Because everybody who can navigate without the aid of a sat nav does know what is what.

came along the M4 today just going past membury westbound and a car crawled out of the services,there was a lorry in front and me doing 56 behind,cars going by on the middle lane so could not go anywhere so I carried on,the car driver totally misjudged the speed of our vehicles put his foot down but it was not enough to pull between us [only a little underpowered car]but he carried on forcing me out as I did not want to hit him but it came extremely close as I then had to avoid a car coming down the middle lane,he then had to drive up the hard shoulder to avoid being hit,he then pulled in behind me pulled out into the middle then outside lane and put his foot down again and disappeared as he went past he put his hand up in apology,i started thinking how much it must have crapped him up,he just did not think,i was going to say unbelievable but nothing surprises me about car drivers anymore
I may be jumping to the wrong conclusion here, but it reads that there wasn’t much gap between you and the lorry in front.

That’s how I read it, however if he`s able to read the situation in advance, he can either back off slightly or give the car a blast of the horn to alert them of his presence and brace for any possible impact. Maybe he can elaborate
