Entering the UK at Dover without a passport

I didn’t know it was possible to enter the UK from France at Dover without a passport until today. Today I left Exeter at 5,30am to drive to Southampton to buy a yacht mast and then to deliver it to Dover, where I was to meet my son. Whilst I was on the M25 he rang me to say, that he had forgotten his passport and to return to Exeter as he thought that he wouldn’t be allowed to cross the channel without it. Anyway he went to the port and told them, no problem they checked him out and he enter at Dover collect the mast and has returned to Amsterdam . Has anyone else done this on here? Eye-balled Harry Monk’s Southern Star parked up on the way home at Yarcombe Hill knacked on arriving home tonight.

Sounds like a thread for Limey phil…

I find the checks are more stringent when leaving the UK. I have driven straight in off the Eurotunnel a few times and never been checked.

When my granddad use to do courier work he had to go to Belgium and was able to travel on a 2 year out of date passport from Dover and back again…

How could they stop AN ENGLISHMAN from coming into his own COUNTRY■■? :sunglasses:

As there is no waterguard in Dover you can just come in, put your name down for a council house and get some benefits. All in the interest of cost efficiencies you understand :stuck_out_tongue:

On one occasion some years ago,I was doing an engineering job in Germany and left my workplace one Friday afternoon to come home for a dinner function on the Saturday night, intending to ship out again on the Monday morning.
It wasn’t until I got to Calais I realised I’d left my passport in My work jacket at the worksite.
I landed in Dover all apologetic and pleaded my case,to be told it was no problem, but make sure I had my passport when I left the country again!
I had my passport couriered from Germany and I got it back on Tuesday morning so It cost me a day.
But I did think at the time, what an arse about way of doing things!
No wonder we are full of ■■■■■■■ illegals!

AFAIK its not a legal requirement to have a passport to travel in between EEC countries.
All you actually are required to have is photographic ID.
Son in law regularly travels on his army ID, or used to a couple of years ago.

I have done it a couple of times.
I keep photocopies of my passport showed them that and got question after question over it.

That’s because travelling to the UK all the checks are carried out in France.
