Norman Ingram:
Talking to my old mate Bagdad Bill, Who was 77 years old on 27th feb, Bill Thomas reminded me about David Barnes of Wigan, who had a accident with a car, who had six arabs in it, and wandered across his side of the road, and he sounded his horn, but they responded a little bit too late, and the look of horrow, when they did look up, but it was too late, the accident happened, they was all killed, he was jailed for life, but was released after a inquiry, but do not know how long he spent inside, Bill would like to know if david is still around, and if any one remembers this, it was in the Sun & mirror, it happened in Saudi. Sandman Norman

Aye up Sandman, might be able to help with a bit more background, although I didn’t know David Barnes personally but the company I worked for did export /import/forwarding work at the same time in the same area and I can only think that this little incident was the one that RF Interport from Leigh motors was involved in. Your’e dead right about it making the national newspapers as well as the local rags who mounted a campaign to get the driver out, IIRC he spent around 6/8 weeks in jail and was then released but told not to ever return to Saudi or he would be thrown into jail, don’t if that last bit is true though and I don’t know if he is still around but some years later I was talking to a guy who said he was ‘that driver’ he was on for Joe Lucas from, think it was, Tyldesley at the time doing Seddon coach chassis to Greece with an F7 and tilt.
Hope that helps
