End of the road.

I spent 9 years working in the office with Jewson controlling transport for 4
Wagons. Put myself through my class 2 and have been driving ever since. I have no intention of going back indoors. Fair enough, we may get rained on, snowed on and blown all over the shop but once you’ve done it, there ain’t no going back!!!

Once a driver, always a driver!!!

Wot 'e said. And less need for a stab-proof vest as a driver either… I did the office route ending up as a depot manager for Nightfreight, then on to recruitment for a spell. Learned a lot about people, not much of it good.

Respect to the people who are doing 15hour days and out all week to earn a decent wage just to keep the nation running whilst taking ■■■■■ from jumped up hitlers n alike !!

I think the more appropiate sentiment would be pity, rather than respect, you’d have to have very low aspirational targets to want to be those doing nights away, you have done tramping but I bet you failed to realise that being ‘celled up’ in something the size of an EU sleeper cab isn’t something that is experienced by convicted murderers, paedophiles, terrorists, etc, the civil rights groups would explode with rage if they were caged like hgv drivers.
Getting out of UK/EU transport is something you can easily do at 24 yrs and looking back at what you are leaving , in the cold light of day, you will probaly have only one regret, you didn’t do it earlier, it is insult laden and ignominous, the longer you stay the greater the danger of you becoming conditioned to the insulting pay and conditions, if you feel the want to drive again go to a ‘free world’ country, you’re young enough.

Awww someone get me a violin.
My pay is great and my conditions are excellent by the way. Your talking out your brown eye.

No your pay isn’t great, seen the pictures of ‘your’ big truck that you uploaded, and your conditions are limited to the squalor that is afforded anyone gullable enough to think that an EU sleeper cab isn’t a cell, then theres the outlook you enjoy whilst doing a night away, ‘sleeping’ in a layby, or those wonderful lorry parks/msa’s, don’t forget those picturesque industrial estates, lets not discuss your toilet fascilities.

Christ you’re a bundle of fun aren’t you. You’re the sort of driver I always get lumbered with in an RDC or on the train. Maybe EU ‘cells’ have changed since your day but now we have these revolutionary things called doors. Operated by the driver no less. Allowing us to get out. Amazing I know.

Desperate to mention that ‘train’ are you?, confirming your ‘big wheeler’ status to the tnuk faithful, although you have never met me in an rdc, nor will you ever, it says plenty about you for doing work of that nature, but its a little reassuring to know others can see this industry for what it is, oh dont worry the doors on the actros I’m paid to drive work fine, trucks have had doors for quite some time now, those with a brain shut them and then go home at the end of the shift, a shift that at worse encompasses 11 hours.

Wow impressive. You have quite a considerable chip on your shoulder. Thank god I never have met you. Have a lovely day, although I’ve a feeling you no idea what one of those is.

Oh and I dont need to mention the train to the ‘tnuk faithful’. If you opened your eyes sometimes you may see things. Nice attempt to belittle me though.

And by the way, those with a brain realise we are all different and some of us want to live our lives differently and enjoy what we do. But hey ho don’t let that get in the way of your simple minded judgemental attitude.

Wow you seem to think you have got me sussed. If that was true you would have known that I left this company about 3 months ago to to go drive a stralis day cab with less hours and more money and now my current employer offered me even more money and a V8 to come back but although of course more hours. So you are wrong my pay is great for what I do.
I’m young and single with a good job and a top of the range truck.
I’m home every weekend and a few nights in the week.
You sound very bitter. Why are you even on this forum?
And your conditions sound much worse than mine, as does your constant negative attitude. You must hate your life man.

I was just thinking that too, I swear some people hate there life so much. As I stated before some people love to drive its in them, it’s a easy job and you don’t have management down your neck its freedom (to a degree)

Go and see Bob the builder and build a ■■■■■■■ bridge and stop depressing everyone else

but its a dead end job unless you can get into the office side

Well thats a load of tripe if ever I heard it. What makes you think an office job isn’t a dead end job? If thats what you want to do go for it but in my 15 years driving I’ve had more fun and seen more than an office worker will have in their entire lives.

That said, good luck.

Totally agree.

I have decent qualifications, certainly “higher” than a fair proportion of drivers.

BanburyDan:
Maybe when the rest of the world/country gets a bit of respect for drivers, we can show ourselves a bit more respect.

Well when we already have a clear disrespect from one of our own - there isn’t much hope for gaining it from the rest of society.

You’d be very surprised (obviously) by the level of education gained by a lot of drivers…

I was not meaning to sound insulting and I have nothing but respect for drivers…but it is clear many of “us” do not like the job…which kind of leads me to ask why they are doing it? I am also quite sure there are and always will be drivers out there who can outthink, outread and generally “out-clever” me any day of the week. I never suggested otherwise. But lets be honest, most drivers do not have high-level academic qualifications, nor do they want them.

I mean you can’t work your way up the ladder, I don’t want to be stuck at the bottom all my life, sure you can earn good money with some company’s but it is a dead end job.

oh thanks

Being “stuck at the bottom” has made me into a better person then i was before. All i want to do is bring home a wage and pay the bills, simples

Well one of our drivers is leaving Friday, I rang up TM and said I still wanted to go back on the road. Was told today I can’t as it would cause more of a problem to recruit an experienced plant operator, whereas it’s easy to get a lorry driver.
Currently looking for a new job…

Providing you keep fit and enjoy good health, you have 30+ years of working life left to do Nathan.
Stick to the loading shovel job, until the right opportunity comes along.

Ahhhhhh I hate that situation, it’s happened a lot at our place and I got out of it before in a previous job. If they see you as an asset to a particular role and you do that job well they keep you there without a thought to what the actual employee wants.

Stupid thing is Dave, the spare man at the quarry wants the job, plus 2 tipper drivers have asked to have a go. Why I’m the only one suitable for the job is beyond me, I could teach a novice to do it in a couple of days…

You’re a wise young man to realise the dead end that lies ahead so early on. At 24 you’ve got a lot of your life ahead of you. While I would definitely agree that it’s true there’s something about driving that gets into your blood once you’ve gotten used to the big diesels… it’s still far outweighed by the way you’re treated, looked down upon by society, overworked, stressed, and the joke of a wage in return.
I could never ever advise any youngster to go into LGV driving, or at least not without feeling very guilty about what I’d be getting them into…

No social life when driving, and the day jobs 8-5 or whatever usually a ■■■■ wage (especially up here in the north) before tramping I was doing 60+ hours for £340 a week class 1 lol just above minimum wage
