END OF COMET

My old buddies at Exeter depot’s trucks saying goodbye. Sad really.

That front one looks worryingly high - looks like the side bars might just have got crunched as well.

No-one would care.

True, weird how these things always happen the worst time around Christmas like with Woolworths.

Bad times

Why do companys fold at this time of year ? or is it just a coincidence…i was unfortunate to have the same thing in the 90’s …2 weeks before xmas + 80 other drivers, we just made the best of it we could…it stinks !

Comet folded because of edith bowman’s wage demands

Sad times,

Hope the lads find something quick, with the greatest a of respect to the shop floor lot, they will find it easier than the Hgv drivers to get work. So I just hope the Hgv lot find something to help feed the families…

Commercial rents are payable 4 times a year on the Quarter Days

One of those Quarter Days is Christmas Day.

Also, as happened with Woollies, suppliers got cold feet and wouldn’t supply stock for Xmas unless it was paid-for up front.

Under those conditions, even a profitable company can fail…it just runs out of cash. No stock for Xmas means no cash to pay the rent.

I’ve done work for comet when Exel Logistics had the contract over 20 or so years ago and it was a lovely number whilst it lasted, 2 or 3 drops covering South Wales, South West and South coast running out of Avonmouth. All the stores had good access except Truro i think and it was good clean work with a free cuppa and biscuits at all the drops.

I liked the work at Comet. The trucks at the time were crap, but blame the Devon lanes and Cornish addresses for that. Also our manager was a can of ■■■■ ex Tank Commander bell end, who thought he was still in. Arse-wipe.

Sounds about right, they probably missed the September payment and have been negotiating with their Landlords since.

Their depot is next door to my place at Avonmouth run by D.H.L I believe, who also do Boots TK Maxx maybe the drivers will find work on the other contracts or further employment in the area, employees at other depots may not be so lucky.

When I read the title of this thread I thought someone was still playing catch-up after 30 years!
