End of an era at Truck and Driver

Gutted to here the news Dave, and I wish you all the best in whatever you do in the future.

Sorry to hear the news.
Ive been a reader for a long time.

Why is it that the people that do a good job always get treated like dirt.

Get what you can out of them mate.

So if Dave is made Redundant the place of Editor cannot be filled, so a ssume T & D is finished.
Good luck Dave

those were my thoughts definitely could be the end of an era.

Agreed, the position must remain ‘redundant’ for 6 months before it can be filled again. Hopefully this isn’t the beginning of the end, still T&D came back once before so who knows.

AIUI, the post can’t be filled by recruiting someone else, but it can be filled by getting an existing employee or employees to do the job - e.g. the editor of Pigeon Fanciers Monthly might be given the job of editing T&D in addition to their existing committments/responsibilities.

Therefore, T&D isn’t necessarily dead simply because it doesn’t have someone whose whole job is to edit it.

True Mr Flibble, which is why I think it may be the begining of end. Would the editor of another magazine in the same publishing group, who is asked to also edit T&D take the same interest as Dave? Probably not IMHO.

Sorry to hear this Dave,

TKDave:
One of which is for me to continue to write for T&D, the magazine I’ve nurtured for 13 years, as a freelance. (Or, of course, go back to driving wagons.)

I’d offer you a job but if you look in the gossip column (oops sorry O/D’s forum) you’ll see why I cant but he ho my might meet each other in the dole queue at Sutton job center

chin up mate

sorry to hear that you do need a compition for the other magazines being the other one is trucking ( which is a bloody good mag ) so does that mean that trucking has the rule to do as it likes.

sorry to here the news Dave good luck for the future i know you will be sadly missed

They could replace him with an Editorial team from with in

Sorry to hear this…I hope you get things sorted soon.

“One point I would make: Small magazines are currently having a hard time. Supermarkets increasingly replace local newsagents and they can’t be arsed with ‘special interest’ titles” …this is why if at all possible I buy my paper and mags from the local newsagent not the supermarket

What sad news.
Dave is a great editor and a lovely guy of whom I have the utmost respect.
He was one of the first persons to interview me about my books, giving me a confidence boosting write up in T&D and also offered me a lot of helpful advice and encouragement when I needed it.
All the very best for the future Dave, whatever you chose to do.

Sad news you are leaving T&D always enjoyed your writing - i have been getting the magazine since issue 1 .

You have fought one illness now fight them!!

really sorry to hear this, you were a good friend when we needed friends most.

anyone who has been made redundant knows the bitter feeling. take time Dave to collect your thoughts and you will be fine.

Those who say his position can’t be filled as EDITOR are correct but they can change the title and mess about with Job Description and then offer a LOWER salary

all the the best for the future
make sure the pay off package includes a good camera

not much more to say really.
i’ve almost always bought truck and driver and have subscribed to it this year even though it sometimes lacks articles that are featured in other truck mags and interesting reading material the crosswords etc give me hours of added enjoyment not found anywhere else.

thanks for hard work i know you have put in dave, shobba rules though mate! :sunglasses:

I have phoned Dave on several occasions regarding that driver bashing scheme, WELL DRIVEN?. Their can’t be many magazines that you can just phone up and speak to the editor.
You will be missed, my friend. I call you’ my friend’ because thats how I think of you, we’ve shared a lot for many years. When Pat Kennet died, he left a big gap to be filled, you did’nt do too bad there, Dave.
Truck & Driver is just like an old friend too, we’re all getting older together. Sadly though, I think the writing is on the wall for the magazine. Over the years their have been a few crisis’s. T&D hobbled on, just like the rest of us. Those of us who are old enough to remember when Motor Transport and Commercial Motor were a real good buy can see how run down these three publications have become at the hands of REED. Sooner or later, I think T&D will go the way of Truck.
T&D might surprise us and rise like the pheonix again, it would’nt be the first time. If that happens, maybe the truckers of Britain would all be able to buy one share in T&D for a tenner a piece, then it would really be ‘First for Drivers!’
I’ll be at the front of the queue for that one too!
Good luck in whatever you do, Dave.
Ps Dont be tempted to go back and drive again, have’nt you heard? The jobs a load of ‘Effluant’ now!
