, j,ust wondering how much traffic is on the roads going north from preston to Glasgow at night.Did a spell on trunk for WH Malcolm in the 70s,Preston to Johnstone and return. We usually ran as a pair but some times for many reasons you where on your own.On the return journey in the very early hours usually in winter there where times wether on A74 or M6 there was nothing.Looking ahead ,no tail lights,no headlights, and behind total darkness. It was surprising how often it happened, remember it felt good, turn the radio up and light another cig.
Most nights i would stop on a layby near the top of Beatock, about where the carriage ways where a long way apart.I usually had a leak and walked around the back of the trailer. One very dark night i was stood by the nearside of the unit doing what you do and i honestly swear someone walked silently passed me.It really spooked me and i dived in the cab on the passenger side,no walk around the back that night started up and away down Beatock.Did not see any one in the lights and although i still stopped there again it was a bit creepy.
I used to do many late night and early morning runs up and down the M6 A74 A68 and A9 in the 80’s and 90’s. The traffic got very light just after the M55 Blackpool turn but the was usually someone getting about. I didn’t run on full beam much untill after the top of the M6 at the A74. once past the A75 it thinned down a bit more. The A 9 and A7 were a differant matter, and there were parts of them even during the day when the hair on the back of my neck would stand on end. At night in the fog it was another story all together.
The other night time road I did often was the A 68 form St Boswells down over the Carter Bar and Northumberland moors. Sometimes I would head of to Newcastle and other times push south on the roller coaster all the way to Scotch Corner.
I often wouldn’t see another vehicle between Jedburgh and Scotch Corner.

Hi you mentioned full beam headlights, there was always one wasn"t there, coming round a curve or approaching the brow of a hill with the clear night sky lit up totaly unconcerned with approaching traffic.Switching briefly to full beam yourself did no good and once passed you could see in the mirror drivers behind you doing the same.
