Does anyone know the story about the derelict mansion just south of Leeming on A1?
I have admired it for years when it was occupied, the lawns were like bowling greens, the conifers neatly trimmed and even the vehicles were parked up in such a neat way.
Now the whole place is empty and all overgrown and i’ve only recently noticed it looks abandoned, so im just been nosey about how its become that way

The haulage firm based there looks like it got wound up some years back, perhaps HMRC or the liqidators have their hands on it
Now if I remember correctly, that house appeared, due to the new A1, use to be an 8wheeler and low loader parked in the original house, then that new place started to take shape, I wondered if the highways dept paid for it due to compolsory purchase of their original houses.
When I went past it the other week I guess its all went wrong for them. Very sad for anyone when their dreams and lively hood have gone

Yes thats the one, cheap selling price is that
I think the bloke that owned that house had several 8w tippers working on A1M works … but obviously has no work as that is completed. The story I heard, was that the house was taken back by the Bank as he had gone bust.
The Bank will just be happy to sell for whatever they are owed.
Not sure about the pond bridge, be just as easy to walk round.

Same question about Alpine lodge at Wetherby. I don’t go past it often now it’s been bypassed but went past on bike a couple of weeks ago. Didn’t see it and couldn’t remember where it was.

On family holidays when I was a kid the Alpine Lodge was one of the several stopping points we’d have on our coach trip to Scotland.
It opened and closed several times, I can remember it being stood vacant long before the new A1 was being built. Several rumours were spread about it, including it being used at one point to grow cannabis, if it’s true or not I wouldn’t like to say.
Last I heard it had been demolished after a fire tore through it.
I’m sure I’ve seen cars and people around the property when I’ve driven past, unless it’s people looking around
I have often wondered about that house too. However, i am more intrigued by the large mansion you can see from the M1 - you can see it as you travel south towards Junction 29, on the Right Hand Side.

When you come south there’s a bridge over the A1 just before the racecourse.
That waste ground is the rear of the Alpine.
Rest was lost when they widened A1
