"Elgors" cafe/fuel stop,Shell garage,Le Mans

How many out there used to stop there, the Shell garage north of Le Mans on the old national road,it had that big fluffy dog called Elgor, the owner was a small skinny guy, with a wife that looked like a top model, and the guy that rode bikes a lot, very good service, croque monsieur was their specialality, toasted ham/cheese sandwhiches. It was ideal for a 45 min break to gun up to the Caen or Cherbourg ferries, thats if you didnt bump in to the French Gendarme called “Pinochio”,on his blue BMW bike, where he would sit on top of the hill with binoculars to catch his prey, and the ones that would get a ferry in one shift from Sunbilla.Mr Fuse did assist, the Customs back then were quite corrupt with back handers for the four journey stamped permits, where a contrubution was paid if one was on the fifth trip, which was not allowed.

We never had a problem with Pinochio , I think he was paid something by GBE not to touch us,many times I saw him (his proper name was Claude) in the Cherbourg office. The story about him being killed by a truck is drivers myth,he is still alive and well ,retired and living in Cherbourg.

We use to stop at egors regular, use to love the croque monsieur  never had a problem with the gendarmes down there :sunglasses: it’s a shame it’s gone now, load renault tractors in le mans up there for a break then up to caen good times :sunglasses:
