I don’t post on this section very much any more as I am far too busy admiring myself in the mirror.
Anyway, on with the post. Over the last few months it seems to me there has been an increase in the " I can’t get a job brigade ".
Unless you live in a particularly baron area, the VAST majority of new passes CAN get a start. It is in fairness, easier to get a class 2 start than a class 1 (especially if you are brand new class 1 without any class 2 experience).
Regardless of the above, get yourself registered with as many agencies as possible. Secondly, and probably just as productive in my view, get yourself on Google and start searching for local hauliers, put some petrol/diesel in your car, and get knocking on doors.
Have a professional and pleasant approach and go armed with appropriate drivers cards and PPE. Don’t give up.
Nobody cares if you have scrimped and saved for your licences. Having a LGV licence does not mean you are automatically entitled to your own brand new Volvo FH and £600 per week. What employers care about is a confident, approachable and reliable driver. You HAVE TO EARN YOUR STRIPES. If you cant put the necessary effort in, then why should an employer give you a chance?
Get out there, and ASK for a chance. Don’t ASK, don’t GET in life. GOOD LUCK.

Cheers Pete!
Yearsleys, it’s just down the road so nice and handy.
I personally take great solace in the fact that many people still don’t have the “can do attitude” of Mr. Beaver.
I love walking into an interview waiting room and seeing “ok so we’ve got three “tapout” sweaters, a couple of bean stain boys, ill-fitting suit man with his JSA booklet in hand, cha-ching! The jobs mine! and I might be able to squeeze another 50p on top of the advertised money as well!”
If I walked into to find 10 Eager Beavers I might not be so confident, and more good supply and competition equals less moolah in my pocket!
So Mr. Beaver pipe down with the “tips” or you’ll ruin it for the rest of us!

Matkirk.
You are a diamond amongst Cubic Zirconia. You are quite right, what on earth was I thinking?
The way to secure decent employment is to procure some Lonsdale trainers and pierce your face with 1000 keyrings.

…and you did it with that post; every word made perfect sense. I’ll take that advice and thank you for it.
Good post Mr Beaver, do you use a budgie mirror ?
You made a good point about new starts expecting employers coming to them to offer a job , then posts on here asking if there are any jobs , that is being lazy.
Dvsa have pages of one man bands to large fleet hauliers on their applications and decisions website .
I got a ferry to France and knocked on doors to find work, a fridge firm told me about a firm in the UK that do Europe.
Went to see them ,asked when could I ship out and how many lorries I had to sub for them .
I found agency the way forward. Take some rubbish jobs, then land in a good one. I got my current job through an agency. Been here 3.5 years now! So technically still my first full time job with new licence
It hasn’t gone unnoticed that you haven’t posted in the nappy and VAN driving forum recently pal, maybe you’re struggling to peer around or through your ego while you admire yourself in the mirror.
My suggestion would be to take a picture and look at that, you must still have a few of those ES photo shoot ones kicking about!
But yeah, those are wise words…
Although I kind of think those aspects are stage 1 of an interview, and if a candidate can’t work them out for themselves, they SHOULD fail stage 1, and as such give candidates with initiative a chance to shine!
Anyway got to go, as I need to go sign on!
I still have an autographed Stobart selfie kept aside just for you Beezle…
Have your agency allowed you in any proper trucks recently mate?
well said Beaver.
id just add don’t confuse the professional CAN DO attitude with PLEASE BEND ME OVER approach
Well said Beaver.
Just to back this up, I start my first driving job in 2 weeks time on Class 1. I have no previous experience at all.
I contacted an agency that was based on site to the company and asked if I could pop in for a chat. I wasn’t holding out much hope as the advert I’d seen online did state “1 year experience preferable” but I really didn’t have anything to lose - My CV has no driving experience on it at all so just posting that on a job site wasn’t going to get me too far (I have several knockback emails to show for this)
I turned up with my things, registered, had a chat with the staff so they got to know me a bit better and they said they would put me through an assessment a couple days after. That done, I was then offered my very first start!

Well done AD!!
And just to further illustrate my point, I phoned up a large logistics company yesterday to see if they were looking for class 1 drivers. Bloke I spoke to said if I can come down tomorrow, they will have a chat with me and potentially give me an assessment drive.
Turned up today 5 minutes early, locked and loaded. 2 hours later I was offered a job which I have accepted.
Start a week on Monday. The job was not advertised on their website, so get asking and get mithering folks.

Let me know the frame proportions mate and I’ll get straight on working out a wrap pattern in Photoshop for bog seat!
I’ll make millions on ebay!!!
Yes they have, they’ve let me limp back to an old haunt of mine where I’ve been ADR night trunking and start ADR multi-drop day again next week, which isn’t going to be at all bad, as my trailer hasn’t get a tail-lift!
Hope the new FTW goes well…
Is it fridge/freezer work again, or are you such a smart cookie that you only do that stuff in the winter?

Lol. Yeah back on general haulage mate. Curtainsiders are the way forward.
