I’m not a driver but was working in the Sittingbourne office for a year (1994). De Rooy still has got a office in Preston. It’s called Intramst UK.

If you speak to any of the drivers now, you will probably need an interpreter
I know of one who lives in Glasgow ![]()
RE: Glasgow drivers ;- Mickey lives in Essex and Frank comes from Aberdeen, and has lived near Eindhoven for 15 years! ![]()
Edcrest no longer exists
,
As far as volume transport went ie the old Edcrest 2500 DAF top sleepers ( 2700 if you were lucky ), take a running check and off you pop to Sweden, Czech Rep. or Greece and give us a call when you get there…
What was left of the UK fleet when it ended in 1997 was registered in Belgium and ran out the companies 1 million kilometres policy until there were no right hand drives on the road. - DeRooy continued with 40 or so Brits under it’s own colours. Work with Philips finished before Y2K and also Nedcar (Volvo) from Sittard.
The Volume side moved to Poland in 2003, but was overhauled 8 months ago after the Whirlpool distribution was scaled down. - DeRooy still transports Whirlpool goods in Benelux from a new build distribution facility in Rosendaal, but the Italian work has finished. - Opel Car transporting in Benelux also ceased last year.
The name Edcrest lingered on as a parking area near Leyland trucks for new chassis in the minds of forgetful DAF personnel who can’t remember the name changed in the late 90’s to Intramast (uk).
The present day;
Edcrest no longer exists
, other than a state of the art chassis distribution hub, with custom built loading bays, supervised loading personnel, electronic entry system, shower / toilet facilities, canteen, bedrooms, a lounge area with TV, computer, and free WiFi access so drivers can relax while their digital tachos are downloaded & analysed for ‘100% compliance or be fired policy’, or while their truck is undergoing it’s rolling 6 week safety inspection at a local dealer. Most drivers prefer to use their own Skype equipment via free wifi as it is also the company policy to aid drivers family life while away from their loved ones. - Heath & safety is an on site priority. not just high viz, protective clothing, and designated smoking areas, but dedicated walkways, pedestrian gates, barriers and custom built lighting. The on site adblue tank is a must as all the fleet is less than 2 years old and are Euro 5 standard. The fleet is also 100% monitored and orchestrated via onboard computers. The planners not only know where the truck is or how fast/ far/ long it is travelling, they can see every time the ignition key is turned on and off, or when a message is received and when it is read by the driver. - Petty theft has been eliminated by having ‘more cctv than the bank of England’ monitored not only on site and at the manned gated entrance, but by Leyland truck security staff via a microwave link and over the internet from Holland. Being just 1 mile from a VOSA test site has meant the company has needed to mature to survive.
I was a driver in 1995 on the volume, but have been in the office for the last 6 years. There is never a month goes by without an ex employee ringing ( 'cause they can’t find us since we moved ) to see if there is work available, especially in January & February.
Edcrest, Intramast, and DeRooy will remain in the hearts and minds of many a trucker, and his conversations for years to come. (especially Glaswegian).
… do you remember that bar just outside Budapest with the oboe playing white haired Belgian guy, what was his name?.. best mates with the Welsh guy with Colins Bar Lloret on his top sleeper? aaagh the good old days
Budapest, LLoret…never been there. Unfortunately I only was sent to our sites in Sittingbourne (loved to live there) and Beauvais (loved to work there). But the long haired driver was Jacques Dolezal.

When I left there were Garry B, Paul , Sean H, Lisa,Karen, Barry the welder and indeed a Chris from Sheernes.Garry had been the TM for a time but after he had left, Chris took over.
Edcrest yard in Sittingbourne is now Dodds Transport HQ.
