EDBRO: Edward Brothers from Bolton

Next year Edbro celebrates their 100 years of existence. In 1916 Maurice Edwards started this company
and in the same year the first (engine-driven) hoist! I guess there is more to highlight on what has been
achieved over the years.

Edbro is part of the Jost-group of industries

I wrote about Edbro about 9 years ago in a series of articles in Classic & Vintage Commercials Magazine using the company’s own photographic archive and with full co-operation from the marketing department of the company. The articles were titled “Band of Brothers” and they covered the three divisions within the company, namely Edwards Brothers (Edbro), Bromilow & Edwards, and Pilot Works.

I went up to Beamish in 1995 for a photo shoot with this:

it was for an Edbro anniversary, as it has the oldest known Bromilow & Edwards tipping gear (original fitment in 1924) and reckoned to be the oldest hydraulic tipper in the world, in working order

I remember reading that ,anyone got a Edbro window sun strip still ?

Bromilow and Edwards also built cabs for several marques including AEC and Albion. They also had a period of time when they built coach and bus bodies for Bolton Corporation (obviously the local bus operation) and others.

They may also have been first with the walking floor in 1938.
