I miss night heaters :frowning:
When I first started driving here I got some pamphlets sent from the Uk and handed them to my Employer, he looked into them and turned them down because it would cost a grand a truck … never mind the fact that they would have cut thousand of dollars off the fuel bill every year due to trucks running the engines 24 hours a day :open_mouth:
This is the way most think over here, Even the huge company I work for now would it seems rather have us idle our 450 bhp night heaters 24/7 than install a fuel saving device which might add a huge 15lbs to the truck weight
At least my new one has a ‘Certified clean idle’ sticker on the side.

you serious pat :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

nearly 2012 in the modern day of green policies and the yanks don’t have night heaters :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: you have to run your lorries 24/7 that’s ridiculous.

all that money spent on big cabs and no night heater is hilarious

check the wattage needed by the heater, buy an inverter of that watage 12 to 240 volts then a dropper to 24 volts, a long way around l know or bolt on another battery and use the combined 24 volt supply for the heater only with insulated earth return direct to the power source.ish

New ones are not cheap

When I worked for the NHS I bought two petrol minibuses for transporting handicapped people to their day centres. I had them fitted with Eberspatcher heaters and when I went to demonstrate them to the staff, I got an official complaint from the union to say that it ‘was unsafe to have a petrol burning heater.’

I produced evidence to show that they were talking ■■■■■■■■ but some of them still refused to use them. You can’t always win :frowning:

Deadly serious mate. Some have APU’s fitted but its rare. I have seen the odd canadian truck with real ‘Webasto’ night heaters and actually saw a brochure in a Detroit deisel dealers last week but most companies say they are a waste of money.
NJ state and NY rest areas have banned idling but when it’s cold or very hot the cops turn a blind eye to prevent drivers freezing to death LOL. I am told that most cops dont bother if the ‘Certified clean idle’ sticker is on the cab. From what I read in my manual the truck only emits Nitrogen and water although I find that hard to believe ?

Hi Pat, when i was at mats a few yrs ago ( with the trucknet gang ) i got tralking to a guy selling night heaters, he told me the same as you have done…bosses get no return from the expense, even though it was explained that they would re-coup their expense via the saving on fuel, and make a lot of drivers happy…what it needs is legislation, to force bosses to fit them, and save the planet…but then again, fuel at a $1 a gallon  wouldnt upset them too much.

I agree fully … they need legislation to make it law.

And by the way it’s about $4.00 a gallon now.

1x 12v battery + 1x 12v battery= 24v.

You can maybe retrofit a 12v glowplug to it?.

Yes, you just need a step-up converter, not sure what rating it will need to be to run a night-heater but this is the sort of thing, just Google for “step-up converter” or “voltage doubler”.

The ones in galaxys are 12v but they are hydronic, ie heat up the coolant circuit, you need an airtronic.

I have just had a night heater put in my truck Pat, I love it, although the way the curtains work, just closing the bunk area off, it does mean that it’s a bit nippy in the cab in the mornings, but the sleeper is nice n toasty :sunglasses:

I did some calculations with one of my bosses regarding an APU (Auxilliary Power Unit) or donkey engine  My truck is an 05 and even though we idle a lot, in summer temps in the +40s for A/C and in winter it gets too cold to rely on a night heater, you have to keep the engine running or the oil turns to treacle and they’ll never start. Anyway my truck had 30% idle time (pre night heater) and it still worked out cheaper to buy the fuel to idle than to purchase an APU, on top of that you have servicing costs and the fuel that an APU uses too, even $4 a gallon diesel doesn’t make a case for a one :open_mouth:

Madness that your lot don’t fit night heaters though, although the clowns out here wouldn’t use them anyway, they just love leaving the truck running all day and all night, so I can see that they’d be wasting their money :unamused:

Does all that idleing not glaze the bores?
