CARRYFAST YOU COULDENT DRIVE SHEEP WITH A GOOD DOG !!!
kr79:
An ‘outdated antique’ that’s always been better to use than a heavy to use slow shifting synchro bag of bolts which the europeans like to use because they don’t think that we know how to drive with a proper box.Having said that there are some drivers here who don’t know how to use the real thing probably because they’ve never been given the chance to learn.I was driving euro trucks here in the 1990’s such as Mercs with a 16 speed synchro box which was no where near as good to drive as earlier wagons fitted with constant mesh 9 or 13 speed fuller roadrangers but who needs the twin splitter. It was a waste of time with those well proven others available. But like synchro boxes the automated manual idea seems just another way of dumbing down the job.
I think you will find the twinsplitter was a constant mesh gearbox it just reduced the number of stick movements to get to top gear and was not a way off dumbing down driving.
I was never a big fan myself but i only used one for a odd day here or there and all the people i know who love them have driven them day in dayout and learnt to get the best of them.
I will aggree i would rather a 13 speed roadranger than any of the big synchro gearboxs on offer. But i think given the option now id go for a volvo i shift over the lot.

I was’nt actually referring to the twin splitter in most of that comparison and I thought that anyone would know that I was actually just defending the roadranger as being a far better option,in my opinion that is,than a typical euro synchro type or an automated manual or for that matter an auto or semi auto even though it’s an old design. It was only the comments in which I said why bother with the twin splitter in view of how good the road ranger was/is that were meant in the context of the twin splitter.

You did have a fair point in your comparisons on your other thread.

OIL LEAKS
If they’d have fitted a Detroit V8 in a Bonneville it probably would’nt have leaked oil as bad as that bike motor did but it would have been zb heavy to pick up if you’d have dropped it on it’s side.

Don’t ask me I’ve never asked them but all the new ones fitted in the wagons here that I knew did’nt leak a drop of oil.But green grenade might mean the colour of the motor (they were mostly painted green) and when you fired it up and then gave it some stick (especially the 16 cylinder) it did sound a bit like WW3 which was another one of the pleasures of driving a wagon fitted with them
